Can you still buy Ezra B 12 year? HELP!

This bourbon will always be important to me, because it is my "gateway bourbon." This is the bourbon that got me excited and then hooked on all the real possible flavors that bourbon has to offer...and the best part is, when it's compared to bottles that are 2 or 3x as expensive, I still think it's better.

To be honest, I think Ezra B is the best bourbon I've had under $80 a bottle....but now I can't find it ANYWHERE. Does anyone know where a guy like me can score a bottle or two of Ezra B? I'm talking about the hand labeled, blue waxed Ezra B 12 year, with the blue and gold trimmed tassle on the bottle....anyone know what I'm tawkin' 'bout?

If anyone could help me find a way to get my hands on this, why I sure would be grateful!

It is still out there, but you will need an assist to get it. I saw a number of bottles of it in South Carolina last summer as well.

When I said that he would need an assist to get it, I was thinking he was in Oregon where they don't allow shipments from stores (IIRC). I don't know if Warshington has the same restrictions.

I believe it is available here in Oregon, but I have to warn you the last bottle I had was horrible! This being a bottler only single barrel product you are going to experience a wide variation in the product and may find you hate your next bottle. I'll check a liquor store this week sometime to see if it is still here and would suggest you try others; however if you are still hellbent on getting it PM me.

Oh, and I took out your link to that other site. We all know what you're talking about trust me.

I thought that this whiskey was made by Ezra Brooks, where they pick the best tasting barrel they have, and then put it away for 12....where am I going wrong on this? Any info would be greatly appreciated....

As you can tell, I'm still a newbie to a lot of this stuff...I am pumped to learn more about bourbon though, so feel free to lecture/wax rhapsodic about the whole thing!

I think what he is pointing out is that single barrel bourbons can be fickle anyway since by nature no two barrels are ever the same. If you have fewer barrels to choose from then there are fewer opportunities to match the flavor profile.

Currently, there is a good supply available in Pennsylvania for about $25. If you do not live close to Pennsylvania and you are going to the Sampler, I would be happy to bring some along for you.

I have seen some dusty old stock in N. Fla. but only in one really out of the way store. There were bottles from two different barrels that were very different colors. I always default to the darkest in that circumstance.

The bottle I bought tasted like watered Weller Antique. If you like the EB12 and have trouble finding it you might want to try the Weller Antique.

Ezra Brooks is just a name. There is no Ezra Brooks company and there is no Ezra Brooks Distillery. In fact, there never was. The brand was created by and named after Ezra Ripy. Members of the Ripy family operated several distilleries in Anderson County, Kentucky. Ezra Brooks was created in about 1957 as a Jack Daniel's knockoff. Jack Daniel's had become very popular and the distillery couldn't supply demand, so other companies stepped in with copycat brands. Evan Williams was created at about the same time for the same reason by Heaven Hill. Ezra Brooks was made by the Ripy-owned Hoffman Distillery outside of Lawrenceburg.

Over the years, the Ezra Brooks brand has had many different owners. When Glenmore owned it, the label invited consumers to visit the Ezra Brooks Distillery, but the distillery to which they were directed, where it was then made, was what is now Charles Medley Distillers Kentucky, the Owensboro distillery being renovated now by Angostura. That was in the late 1980s, until about 1991, when that distillery closed.

The current owner and producer of Ezra Brooks is Luxco, a non-distiller producer based in St. Louis, MO. Since Luxco is not a distiller, they buy bulk whiskey. Non-distiller producers rarely disclose the sources of their whiskey and often they obtain whiskey from multiple sources, though Luxco has been relatively open about their relationship with Heaven Hill in this regard. More likely than not, Ezra Brooks is whiskey made at Heaven Hill.

According to the Luxco web site, Ezra B Single Barrel is still available. While I certainly understand the emotional attachment one can have to a particular brand, Elijah Craig 12-year-old is probably a very close substitute.

Based on this quote from Cowdery, I compared these two tonight, and they were nothing alike.

Thanks everyone for all the offers of help! It looks like it's pretty much easy to get a hold of, so I'll just keep my eyes open here in WA for the next month or so and see if I can track it down. However, if I can't make it happen, I'll definitely hit some of you nice folk up on that offer of grabbin' me a bottle.

Also, thanks for all the insight about Ezra Brooks as a brand, that's really interesting news! I might have to give some EC 12 a shot!

I think you have a bad bottle, give it another try, i did, found a good batch and bought a half dozen of them. Every one except for 2 of them (as they're not cracked yet) have been superb. :drinking:
