I've driven through the state a few times, but never stopped. Forgive me, I didn't know what I was missing!!

My bourbon drinking pal, Josh, and I made a quick trip last weekend, leaving my house in Detroit at 4:30 am. We meant business!

In one day we saw Jim Beam, Heaven Hill, and Makers Mark, in that order. I had never been to a distillery so it was quite a thrill to see the huge rack houses, smell that heavenly smell, stick my finger in the mash (at MM), and do a little tasting. I think the drive to MM from HH alone was worth the trip. It was nice to meet Kickert too!

I'm looking forward to going back again in April!

Hey Amy,

I am glad you enjoyed your time here in KY. It was great meeting up with you and Josh. If you are ever in the neighborhood, give a shout.

And you were there in late March. Over the next few weeks, it just keeps getting better and better.

The first time I visited Makers Mark I took the back roads. Oh yeah, that is rolling terrain, and if you are there early in the year when the tobacco farmers are transferring the seedlings from the bed to the field you need to be careful topping those hills because those tractors and trailers are only going about 10 miles an hour.

Are you kidding me? there are no other roads besides backroads going to MM.

After the MM tour, we found a secluded place for an informal roadside tasting...

After we and Kickert parted ways (something about a pregnant wife at home, whatever) we went to Wright-Meyer winery in Sheperdsville, sampled some white wines as good as those back home, and watched the Boilermakers reach the Sweet 16  , then had supper at Bryan's Hog Wild in Lebanon Jct. (recommended by Bettye Jo).

Amy had the pulled pork, fried okra and green beans and I had a small rack with deep fried corn-on-the-cob and the slaw. What a great meal! We're definately going back next time.

Then we went to the Fern Valley Liquor Barn where due to mental fatigue we didn't buy anything but decided to hold out for someplace that carried Ritt. In retrospect, should have gotten two handles each of Old Fitz and VOB BiB and that bottle of Rowan's Creek (sorry Boozer), the VWFRR, the Amer. Honey minis and the VOFitz. Oh well, more fun for next time!

God bless Kentucky!

Ben told us afterwards that he thought we were taking him out to the tobacco fields to kill him and dump his body. Where did ppl get such ideas about Detroiters?
