I stopped in our local Liquor store and spyed a new collection of the BTAC on the shelves- but one seemed odd man out. Stagg at 137.6 with a 2002 whisky of the year label. Think I oughta bring that bad boy home....

Yes it does... I don't know how the heck that got mixed in with the bunch of Saz, WLW and Woodford 1838, which I think are all new issue.

BTW, I did bring it home. It is teasing me at the moment. Anybody ever have the chance to taste this vintage?

Cheers

Okay, a moment of truth -- are you a 'collector' or a 'bourbonista'?!

I've bought it, sold it, opened it, tasted it (I have witnesses, and compatriots, here -- I OPEN the impossible stuff!). This year's might be its runner-up (and I have two of those!) How about you?

Open it! I double-dare you, with the visages of Pappy Van Winkle and Elmer T. Lee on top! Compare it to the '08 Stagg -- and report back!

Or, are you a lily-livered *&^(^#^%$ 'collector'?!

:slappin:

Good find, by the way.

Being in Reno NV, we don't usually get the pick of the litter bourbon-wise, so to see these beauties on the local shelf was quite a surprise. (I don't have the '08 available unless I mail order it.) I guess they must have just got 'em in, cuz I go in there at least once a week, in fact- I was in there earlier to grab a bottle of Lot B. This was actually prompted by me sitting here and wondering the difference between my orvw 10/107 vintage and new make. No comparison unfortunately... So I thought I'd pick up the new lot B and see how it held up to the old rip. Well, the lot B is a contender at least, and very good for the money these days... but I digress.

I am indeed not a collector- but sure do enjoy sipping the good stuff. Sometimes you just end up with a few bottles that turn out to be worth saving for a while.

Here's a good one for ya- a while back I'd been watching the development of the Hirsch 20 prices. About a year ago I saw one sell for about 700 on ebay. I was lucky to get some of these years ago at a pretty good discount. I had a couple bottles left and even knowing the current price decided to open another one. I had a real good buddy over and he'd just gone thru a divorce and then lost his job (sheesh) so I pulled out a bottle of Hirsch 20 (he knows what it is btw) and said 'look friend let's cheer us up eh?'

So, about a month ago I decided to sell one of my last bottles on ebay to help finance a trip to 'Ol Kentucky to check out a distillery or two.

I'm pretty sure I've made my whisk(e)y bones over the last 20 yrs or so...

Strange thing, I went back to the store today and they had another one of the GTS on the shelf... huh...

So this afternoon I had off. My underemployed divorced freind from above had some time and we had a few.

The starting point was a few brew. Sierra NV Pale Bock, then New Belgium 2 below amber ale, a brown bock from Mendocino, then back to the SN Pale Bock. BBQ pork to wash it down.

Next up, we looked at the bottle of GTS, wow that is some dark gorgeous looking stuff, then had a sample of Old Fettercairne 10. I know, a bit of a crap out... ;-) Then Rosebank 1991 15, Highland Park 23 from '75 and a bit of Smoky Irish called Connemara. Then VW lot b, Willetts pot still, some Mezcal called Minero and one called Tobala. Then more bourbon uh.... Vintage 17.

All these were exceptional, with the Tobala and the Vintage 17 winning BOS for the day.

Cheers,

RW

This is common, many stores only put one bottle out at a time of stuff like that. They know they are going to sell them, so it is better to have stuff on the shelf than to look sold out.

As long as they keep putting it out, I will keep bringing them home...

The moral of the story is, look for the unexpected. I walked into a store last year and found a complete set of BTAC from the original year; 2000.

Question - did you buy it and at what price?

I bought all of them at around $50 a bottle. It was a complete set (3 bottles) plus an extra Saz and ER.
