Lot B revisited

In my nearly-constant quest to find and stock a somewhat limited selection of outstanding (to my tastes) Bourbon and Rye expressions I have a propensity to compare xyz to whatever else I know I already love.

This comparison-approach usually works out pretty well, but in the case of Lot B it's been nothing short of a terrible failure in that up until last night I was underwhelmed with Lot B and had more or less written it off...

I mean - I love Pappy 15 - which isn't much more expensive than Lot B, and I like ORVW 10/107 quite a bit too - and it's notably cheaper than Lot B, so Lot B had taken a seemingly permanent backseat to those two.

But - thanks in part to the limited selection of VW's and BTAC's at DaveCo last night I ended up with a bottle of Lot B (my first in several months) and also due to me not drinking at home - I've now had change of heart...

Last night I drank nothing but Lot B, a half-bottle in fact, and every single sip was nothing short of outstanding in its own right (sans comparisons)... Lot B is a truly delicious Bourbon, and certainly worthy of space in my bar.

Sometimes, like other aspects of life, you just have to enjoy something for what it is - and I'm happy to admit I was far too quick to write-off Lot B. Fortunately, circumstances gave me an opportunity to fix my error.

Great post DD. My first bottle of Lot B was about a year and a half ago. I purchased it before I really had a decent grasp on the differences in bourbons. At that time, the nuances and flavors of individual bourbons were still somewhat muddled to my senses of taste and smell. I had a very general idea of what I liked, or what I thought I liked. Now, after months of experiencing many different bourbons, and with the help and education offered up by many members of SB.com, I'm finally starting to appreciate what every bourbon has to offer. I wasn't underwhelmed by my first bottle of Lot B, I think I just didn't "get it" yet. I think I "get it" quite a bit more now. I bought a bottle back in December. It's wonderful. To quote you, "Lot B is a truly delicious Bourbon, and certainly worthy of space in my bar." I don't think you made an error. Sometimes things just change. In your (our) case, for the better. I agree with everything you've said DD. My favorite is Pappy 15 but it is pricey and more importantly very hard to come by. For a while it wasn't much more expensive than Lot B so when available the choice was an easy one. ORVW 10/107 is also fantastic and as you mentioned far cheaper, but also harder to come by than the Lot B for some reason. So while I always had Lot B on the bar, I took fewer pours from it than the others. Now I find myself drinking a lot more of it these days as my bunker of Pappy 15's (3 left) and ORVW's (4 left) has shrunk. So the fact that I can get the Lot B without a problem is one good reason to love it and the second is it's damn good bourbon!

Lot B lover, here. The stuff is great, nice "chocolate covered cherries" note. It makes a wonderful after dinner drink. It is almost hard for me to belive that someone wouldn't love it. The only thing I find wanting is "proof".

i'm actually sipping it as i read this thread. it's my first bottle and i've loved every single drop of it. outside of some more obvious bits of vanilla, i get hints of cinnamon and a subtle earthiness, akin to a light green tea. i have yet to taste a bourbon which gives me the same feeling. it...somehow feels very distinguished without coming off as pretentious.

(i never noticed it before, but after reading IllFarmboy's post i took a sip and paused...i certainly understood that chocolate/cherry comment. nothing too overpowering in this pour which seems to allow for so many flavors to be discovered.)

The lesson here is to always give several tries (hopefully separated by a few weeks or more) before writing off a bourbon. YOUR sense of taste taste can vary significantly from time to time. So to be fair, give every one several chances.

Admittedly this is hard to do with a truly dreadful pour like WR4G --- but in the long run, it will pay off.

I have grown to appreciate several bottlings that at first I had a ho-hum reaction to, but I've never warmed to anything I thought was just plain bad. Conversely, Ive grown to dislike a few (a very few) that at first blush I thought were just OK.

My first bottle of bourbon was EWSB .. it was good. then this site lead me to Lot B.

It was heaven.
