Has anyone heard of Bedford Brothers or Hughes Brothers Distillery?

I'm doing a little research ... What I've been told so far is that there was apparently a distillery started in Bedford County, PA about 1872 ... making pure rye whiskey ... I think it was either named Hughes Brothers or Bedford Brothers Distillery. I also think it made whiskey until prohibition, and then shut its doors forever.

I would guess that they made Monongahela Rye ... but not sure ... and I have no idea what brands were made there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry Doug,

the folks that run this site are not....enthusiastic about sending people in that direction. Hope that hint helps.

EXCUSE ME?!?!?!?!?!?!?! In case it doesn't go without saying, yeah that statement bothers me.

The biggest problem I've seen lately with this site, moreso lately, is people being information hoards which I'd say you just exemplified. To quote yourself PM sent, we'll discuss more....

Y'all get upset with whatever you want to.

I was trying to follow the rules that have been laid down by the mods and owners.

This statement really hurts....I am always interested in sharing information with people....and do so on a daily basis.

Christian,

It is nothing like that. The information that was being looked for is on BE.com in detail.

Just as SB does not want folks lifting info from here for BE or. BD.com, it would be inappropriate for Jeff or others to lift info from those sites.

Jeff and I send folks over to SB all the time. A few of us that float the other bourbon sites do our best not to infringe upon the other sites.

There is a lot of politics between the sites that we do not care to get involved in, but do respect the owners of each site and will respect the wishes and feelings of each party.

If Bourbon Geek would like to summarize the info he gained, I think that would be appropriate.

Jeff may not be the most tolerant person for off topics :D, but no one can accuse him of not being free flowing with bourbon knowledge.

If I have some time tonight, I will summarize the history that I have in this area.

It would be best if you delete the interchange above though so we can keep this thread pure.

Take care,

Emerald

Thank you for clearing that up Spun as well as did Jeff in a PM. Politics being what they are, it'd sure be nice if the bourbon knowledge wasn't divided...

  • 8 years later...

Hi,

I realize I'm a few years late on this topic, but hopefully, it can still generate a response. I was digging around in my family tree a while back and found this site.  I wanted to reply so bad but I was not accepted onto the site for what seemed like months.  I got a few answers from relatives, etc. called off my search.  While digging a little more recently I came back across this message board and remembered my login.

So, long story short, my late grandmother's maiden name was Hughes. I believe that it was either her uncles (Patrick and Frank?) or maybe one step further back that were, in fact, the Hughes Brothers who ran the distillery in Schellsburg PA.  My family has many bottles and shot glasses but I never got as much information as I wanted about this part of my family history.  I want to know as much as I can about the Hughes Bro. Distillery.  I don't have a lot of knowledge of my ancestry on that side of my family because most all of them are gone and it is fairly difficult to work the ancestry sites unless you sell your firstborn, so I know this probably isn't a site for history lessons but I would really appreciate any information.

Thanks so much!
