The Big Old List of American Distilleries

I posted a prototype of this list a few months ago when I started it. Well I finally finished and it's at the link below.

This is my attempt to identify every distillery in the US that is currently making and marketing whiskey along with their brands.

I also attempted to list as many independent bottlers or label owners as possible. If you see anything I missed, please let me know.

Very nice list--looks like it was a lot of work. Here's an addition for you (maybe). There's supposedly a microdistiller in Detroit making Valenine Vodka. The vodka exists, but I'm skeptical about the distiller and its whereabouts. The actual location is conspicuously absent from the website: http://www.valentinevodka.com/innerindex.php

Thanks for the comments guys. The idea of the list was distilleries that actually have whiskey on the market, such that if you see a bottle of American whiskey on the shelf in the US, you can go back to this list and see what it is. One exception to this is blended whiskies, which I did not include just because it was hard to get a handle on them.

Bonneamie, I didn't include distilleries that don't produce whiskey. There are lots of micros out there that make brandy, vodka, eau de vie and other spirits that aren't on the list. However, your skepticism may be merited. I found a number of "micro-distilleries" which seemed to consist of little more than a website and an idea.

Kickert, I did use the ADI craft distillery list as a source. It had a few problems for my use and required additional research in that I don't know what their criteria for addition to the list is, but the list doesn't distinguish between micros that are actually distilling and those are bottling other whiskies or those that are still in the planning stage. So, while I used the list, not every distillery listed as making whiskey qualifies for my list.

Picker22, thanks for the tip. I've never heard of Raef Hollister and will check it out. Are they currently selling whiskey?

A little info on Black Maple Hill -

The Black Maple Hill label is owned by CVI Brands, a very small company based in California, CVI Brands sources out rye and bourbon to bottle under the Black Maple Hill label, they also import single malts, cognacs and armagnacs.

Thanks for all the leads guys. Sorting out the bottlers from the label owners and distributors has been the hardest task for this list.

According to the KY Secretary of State, Classic Cask is a KBD entity. That doesn't mean that someone else doesn't own the label, but KBD appears to do the bottling.

Black Maple Hill is indeed registered to a company run by Julian Van Winkle. CVI appears to be the distributor, but whether they own the brand or not, I can't tell.

The Kentucky Secretary of State's database just shows you who holds the active DBA, but when it points to Heaven Hill or KBD, there is no way to tell if that producer owns the DBA or is simply bottling the product under contract for the actual DBA owner.
