CajunKY
I had the opprotunity to sample Four Grain and the Sonoma varieties from Woodford Reserve yesterday and appreciated both of them. I later came across a bottle of Four Grain and am tempted to get it as a bunker item or collectible. Is it worth it? And moveable at a later date if I decided not to open it? I know you should buy what you like but I am torn on this one.

docbible
I agree with Barturtle. I really dislike all three (4 grain, sonoma, and sweetmash). I purchased four bottles of each when they first were released. I kept the usual for the bunker as it is a pretty pot still bottle but had a hard time giving away the others. IMO WR is having a hard time finding a mashbill that will work on their copper stills. The experiments will continue untill they "hit it". I do not feel the price is worth the drink or the resale. Purchase for the history only. tim
Lost Pollito
4 grain seems to be a love or hate affair. I liked that it tasted different than other whisk(e)y I've tried. Not my favorite from the mc collection, but nice change of pace. I prefer the Sweet Mash over 4 grain, and 4 grain over sonoma. I would guess the copper ting is what most people dislike about the 4grain?

I always tap this kind of thread related to this four grain stuff...I respond Timothy's thread because he's proved himself as a leading taster among our group. TNbourbon
My disaffection with the label is open and long-standing: http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=71949&postcount=1 I guess you can say that the Four Grain is a 'hot' bourbon -- that thread was about as heated as I recall SB.com getting. MissingKY
Aside from the normal caveats about collecting, I'd say this is one to only stock up on if you enjoy it. I don't know how easy it will be to move/trade any extras at a later date. Even though this was a limited release, there's still a ton of it on store shelves (seems like every fairly nice store I go into has some), and given its steep price and middling (to be charitable) reviews from folks on the board, I'd guess a lot of these bottles will be sitting around gathering dust in stores for years. SBOmarc
If it were any good at all the price would not be an issue. I gave it chances that were not at my expense but would have a hard time paying for it at all.
CajunKY
Sorry to bring up some bad memories about this Bourbon! I honestly was just wondering if most thought this was a bottle worth not passing over and I got my answer. The small sample of four grain I had I didn't think badly of but was unsure if I should keep my wallet holstered at that price.I may be a new guy to the forums but this is far from my first bottle of bourbon. The reference to the item as a collectible was based off the fact that I have quite a few bottles opened at the moment and if I decided not to travel further down the four grain route I didn't want to be stuck with a pricey mantle piece. I really didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. Fortunately I had another member of the forum offer up a bottle at a very drinkable price and I plan to do some further tasting on this bottle.I do appreciate the feedback and am glad I posted here before I took the plunge. Lost Pollito
While I'm not a huge fan of the taste, I am a huge fan of trying something new. That's what I like about the mc collection, and bt experiments. Might not be your cup of tea, but you gotta appreciate the effort.
jburlowski
One of only two bottles of bourbon that I ever found to be absolutely undrinkable (and unusable even for cooking). The other was a bottle with a horrendous case of "cork taint". In a head-to-head match-up, I'd go with the cork-tainted one.

redz28
I agree that the Sonoma and SweetMash weren't very impressive, but I enjoyed the WRFG. I also have a friend who would like a bottle. Is it inappropriate to ask where you saw said bottle?

Is it inappropriate to ask where you saw said bottle? No, not at all. It was in Cape Cod at Luke's Liquors. They had a bottle in the case and I was tempted as I liked the taste of Four Grain I had and I haven't seen any in Kentucky for awhile.
Bourbon Geek
The whole line extension program for Woodford Reserve is troubling for me. It seems that they are far more interested in the press they can generate than the taste or quality of the product itself. The releases are very well scripted for the press, but the quantity released is so miniscule that it is hardly worth the while for a bar to pick it up. Even the high volume, up scale bourbon type bars usually can only get their hands on a couple of bottles. So it is difficult to get a single drink sample to see if the product is all that it's cracked up to be in the press releases.I was so disappointed with the 4 grain and then the SC finish was even worse ... so I never even bothered trying to sample the sweet mash.I say the heck with all the phony press hype ... give me a 7 or 8 year old Old Forester version ... 90 to 100 proof ... not chill filtered ... and it will be the best tasting product Brown - Forman has ever made. Oh, excuse me ... but I think that is what Woodford Reserve was from 1996 until about 2003 or 2004 ... Can we have it back ... please???It is very instructive to do a blind tasting with 2 bottles of WR ... one pre 2003 ... and one current. Such a difference ... Such a difference ...I was in Providence, RI for business last week. Decided to try a different drink (usual is WR) Tried Knob Creek and it was awfull. Then had a WR and the damn thing tasted so bad that I had to ask the barkeeper if he poured me another Knob Creek or WR as I requested. He insisted it was WR but it was horrible, not anything like the WR I have at home! How could they be sooo different?
