Special Turkeys: Worth Drinking?

Through two friends I've recently gotten an introduction to the world of special, mostly duty-free or overseas, WT bottlings. e.g. Hertitage, Stampede, Tribute, etc.

Here's my question, are these good enough or unique enough to make drinking them worth while? Or are they mostly collector's items that are more at home on a shelf?

I have a few special Turkeys and yes they are very different. The Hertitage that I bought in Duty Free is so different than any other WT product and very nice to boot.

Not sure about Stampede. Many say that Tribute is one of the best bottlings that WT has done so if you can find one at a reasonable price hop on it.

Or maybe gobble it up:lol:

Tribute is one of the best bourbons I have ever had. I wish I could find another one.

I say DRINK EM!

I was very dissapointed with my bottle of Freedom. It's been open for about three years now, and still fails to impress.

I'll agree with Cam. The Freedom was a disappointment. The Legend and Tradition are good. I've never had a stampede.

We open everything at our house! I usually try to get doubles

Thanks for the input guys. I'll be doing some travelling this summer and I have a feeling that a Legend is in my future, so I was curious if bagging one of these birds would be worth it. Thanks again!

Can't really put Tribute in the same class as the others because it was a domestic release whereas the other were either export or duty free only, or some combination thereof.

And yes, I find Tribute to be very, very good.

You have to look at it and determine, at least from the specs, whether or not it's essentially the same as something in domestic distribution, because if it is you'll probably pay too much for the special edition. It's a distinction between commerative bottlings and genuinely unique contents. Of course, even comparing specs doesn't tell you everything, because sometimes a certain bottling hits your tastebone right where you like it. To determine that you have to cage a taste.

Chuck raises a great point but I have to say Tribute is one of my personal all time favorites. I open a bottle every year and spread it through Sept, Oct and Nov (our anniversary, Arlene's birthday and mine respectively). A truly wonderful pour.

Well Ken, I'm Scott from Willowick and I'm a big Wild Turkey fan.

Let me know if you need any help around the yard this fall, you know, like after you crack open this years bottle. :-)

I'd love to try some Tribute sometime. I ended up opening that KY Legend and it is great. Kind pushing the envelope for me as far as wood goes, but I love it.

Was in a bar in Brooklyn a few years ago. We noticed an unopened bottle of Tribute on the back bar and got the bartender to open it and serve us a couple of glasses. Come to find out it was the owner's prize, signed bottle! He fired the guy but we pleaded his case (if you don't want something opened, don't put it on the back bar) and he got his job back.

Now that's funny what an idiot the owner was to put that on the bar.
