Vatting question - EWBL meets OO...

Do you think a bit, say 1 part Old Overholt to 2 parts Evan Williams Black might fix "the young and restless" corn of plain old (but does the trick) EVBL?

I think both of these are good pours that stand up well on their own. I would concider both of these cheap in price only not in quality. As far as vatting them together there is only one way to find out the outcome. Give it a go. Tell us how it turns out.

I once blended Wild turkey Rye and Knob Creek. It didn't work. Later when I posted the results, if I remember right, Gary Gillman, a master at creating blends suggested that when blending two distinctly different whiskeys sometimes other constituent whiskeys have to be added to smooth things into a well blended amalgam.

To date my only success at blending has been to add a bit of WTRR 101 to FRSB.

pretty damn good.

has a little yeasty bread mid/late taste.

it reminds me of what the old EW tasted like.

Gary G., of 'Gillmanization' fame, visited here less than 10 days ago, and left the following:

• "Garry's (I assume somebody else spelled that) 30-40 rums blended"'
  
• "Gary's vatted malt (Scotch) whiskies"
  

Both are, not surprisingly, excellent.

As a long-time acolyte -- and, as best I understand Gary's mindset -- you wish to supply whatever is missing via blending.

Thus, if you think Old Overholt rye or Evan Williams Black is lacking something, you're looking for 1) age, and/or 2) wheat, as both are rye-centric.

If you think that age is the missing factor, try adding some Saz Jr., or even standard Wild Turkey Rye. Something like Wild Turkey Rare Breed would be an out-lyer.

If you think the rye is overblown, inject some (wheat being milder than rye, generally) Weller Antique 107-proof, or even Maker's Mark (at slightly higher percentages).

In general, you're looking to balance, both for age and mashbill.

I once did a blending of wheated bourbons that worked UNTIL a certain point. I forget the proportions, but it was mostly Maker's with about half its volume of Weller Antique (which is actually cheaper!), and a small amount of ORVW 10YO. And it was very good.

Then I added some Old Fitz BIB, and the whole thing went to hell. Inexplicably. I figured that all the wheaters would complement each other, but this was not the case.

I was able to rescue this vatting by adding more Maker's and a shot of BTAC WLW, but I was still extremely surprised at how badly Fitz played with Maker's and the BT wheaters.

I laugh when I read how you keep adding, to try and salvage a poor vatting. I've done the same. Problem is, you end up getting a pour that's about 10 oz.!! :drinking:
