Buffalo Trace Old Taylor Welcoming...anyone else attending?

Im on my way to the BT distillery Wednesday afternoon for the Old Taylor party, which provides me with a chance to meet Elmer and maybe pick up a few bottles I'm missing :bigeyes:

Mark Brown (CEO of Buffalo Trace) in his introductory remarks did not go into the details but said it was serendipitous set of circumstances that they were able to purchase the brand from Jim Beam.

I am not certain I heard this correctly -- maybe someone else can confirm -- but I believe they also got 1,700 barrels of bourbon as part of the transaction.

That's a lot of barrels.

Sounds like a long time before BT can change the taste of OT, that is if they want to.

There are only about 20 to 22 cases of bourbon per barrel ... depending on proof and age ... that represents about 34,000 to 37,400 cases ... I gotta believe that Old Taylor sells that much in a year ... maybe not ...

So ... not that long before BT can effect the OT product. Heck, they COULD do so immediately by mingling these barrels with other stuff ...

Since OT under Beam had a 6 yr age statement, one can assume that all the barrels were that age or less. My guess (and it's just that) is that OT didn't sell that many barrrels in a year.

Mark told me that one of the reasons that Buffalo trace was able to get the brand is that the sales were down to only about 13,000 cases in three states. I know he said Missouri was one of the states and I think the other two were Arkansas and Tennessee.

I am sure Buffalo Trace will do a better job than Beam at promoting the Old Taylor brand.

Plenty of it here in MI.

It is also available in SC, NC, ID, MS, NV, OR, UT, VA and VT. Many of these are control states and I think Beam would bottle a bunch of 1L's and 1'75L's and make a deal with these states in order to move stock out the door. In the past I think I have even seen it in Pa. too!

Actually have a few bottles her in northern Illinois too. The one I have looks like it's from either 2000 or 2002. Joe

Old Taylor is also sold in California!

Old Taylor is still sold nationwide, but the majority of the sales takes place in those three states. At least that was what Mark Brown told me. The lack of sales elsewhere madethe sale possible.

I also imagine that BT is tracking sales from them to distributors, not so much whether there are bottles on retail shelves.

I would guess distributors order Old Taylor quite irregularly in most of the country - which seems to agree with accounts like Joe's of bottles with several year old dates.

Several stores locally have OT on the "close-out" counter. Does this mean that a label change (or more) is in the offing?
