Bringing bourbon to Germany

Hello all!

Somewhere I lost the information I had acquired regarding bringing bourbon to Germany. Maybe you can help me out.

If I remember correctly, my wife and I can each bring in 1 liter (tell me where I can find bourbon in liters) of bourbon (Old Weller Antique) tax free. The bottles will be ziplocked and bubble wrapped in our checked in baggage.

Now, if I remember correctly, I can bring in additional liters (up to 4 more liters) and pay a tax of about $6.00 per liter. Can anyone verify this?

I had all of this information bookmarked and printed out, but I discovered that I lost it. I have 4 thirsty cousins near Frankfurt patiently waiting. :grin:

I'm always more concerned about taking stuff out of Germany, not in. I would think that one liter per person sound about right.

Those should be OK. I know JT Stagg is considered a hazardous material (high proof)and not allowed.

Interesting question as I have just returned from Germany. I flew to Germany via Dulles (Washington DC) in early June with two bottles of Woodford Reserve. I arrived at Frankfurt am Main and then transfered to Berlin Tegel. By the time I got my bags back, in Berlin, the two bottles of Bourbon were gone. My bags were opened by the TSA. I know this because they left a pamphlet in each bag they opened and I noticed my netbook had been turned on and not turned off. Nothing else was taken from my bags; not the spare camera, 40 gigs of SD chips, computers, etc just the two bottles of Woodford Reserve. I have been in such a hustle that I have not even thought about those two missing bottles until now. I replaced the bottles with a few liters of Absolwent Wodka when I was in Poland so no big loss but, still, I'd like to know why my booze was removed.

By the way I thought I would add that I saw Jim Beam and a few other brands being sold at the Duty Free stores at Frankfurt airport for something like 18 euro per liter bottle. The next time I go over I think it would be worth my effort just to pick up a liter at the duty free rather than deal with packing it in my bags, worrying about the bottles leaking or getting damaged and eventually finding that the bottles just disappeared.

I recall seeing Beam, Daniels, and Turkey in FRA a couple of years ago. Bourbon selection is rather limited to the big brands in Germany, but no Old Weller Antique, and that's my favorite.

I contacted TSA & asked them if there are travel restrictions on liquor in checked in baggage. No reply yet. I also mentioned a couple of friends of mine had flown back from the Bourbon Festival in Kentucky 2 years ago and their bourbon was missing from their baggage!!! What a shame - they were all Van Winkles!!! Don't ask me how they got them, they wouldn't say, but they were VERY disappointed!!!
