IronHead
I think you can include the current BiB Old Fitz in that group of sub par wheaters, but that's just my opinion.

Josh
Yep, I agree, from what I hear Parker just isn't interested in wheaters. Then HH should sell the brand off to someone who will do it right. As it is now it's an embarassment, worse than Michter's.
Joshua
I agree with -UA up there. It is an embarrassment. I understand things change, and I hate sounding like I'm on a "if it's not dusty it's crap!" rant... but turning one of the best bourbons from days past into one of the worst current productions is too far. I REALLY hate being negative with this stuff... and old weller (Matt's gold vein OWA) is superior to new OWA... however I still love new OWA. I wish OF BIB was the same... with the old being better but the new still being great juice. Sadly it's just not the case
jeff
Q: What's going on with Old Weller Antique?A: Nothing, it's just aother sub-par wheater. Since Buffalo Trace killed off Centennial there has been a great void in the world of wheaters.Oh man, you had to go and remind me of the Centennial. I sure miss that bourbon. That and OCPR have left a great hole in my heart
jeff
Oh yeah, the Antique goes for $19.99 here in Lexington. The SR is $15.99 and a favorite of mine to use for mixing. The 12yo has been absent for a few months now.

Sadly it's just not the caseSince as legend has it Pappy was instrumental in helping Bill Samuels get MM up and running Bill Jr. ought to ramp up production, buy the label, kill off everything but the BiB and put 100 proof Maker's juice in the Old Fitz BiB bottle. Yeah, that'll happen:slappin:
T Comp
If you really want a sub-par wheater, check out any current Old Fitzgerald offerings other than the BiB.An 86 proof Old Fitzgerald Prime, I bought at a Rite Aid in Kentucky last summer, really was dreadful. This was very unbalanced with overpowering alcohol and acetone on both the nose and taste, even at this proof. I could have excused it for its $9.49 price, but the Heaven Hill BIB, also at $9.49, and the even $1.00 cheaper, HH green label 6 year 90 proof, are very tasty and drinkable. Ruby K
That is a Weller 12...get them while you can! agreed! in fact, i haven't seen the weller 12 bottled like that in at least two years. It would be so much of a stretch for those bottles to be SW, right?

I've had a few bottles lately. All of which ended up in a shot glass, and not in a glencairn.
smokinjoe
Whoops. I'm in the minority, it looks like. But, I'm very fond of the current Old Fitz BIB. The low price is a plus for me, too.
Old Lamplighter
Along the lines of Weller, I got a question that has been tickling my mind for a while now. This is not to do with Antique, so, if the moderator sees fit to move it to another thread, not a problem. Several months ago, while in town visiting my sister, I came across an old store that had several bottles of Weller Spl Rsv - Louisville....which means it is S-W juice. My own experience with a Frankfort SR a while back was not a pleasant one to say the least and I have never been inclined to try it again. However, if the S-W SR has a rep of being considerably better, I would be inclined to go back this weekend and grab one or more of them. What is the opinion of the experts in this regard? I was in there N-Y Eve and he still had them there collecting dust. I have always loved Antique from S-W to present.....but, am somewhat shy of the SR. Guess for the price point of SR, I should not worry bout it too much....lol.
doubleblank
It's interesting that you like Weller Antique 107 but didn't care for the Special Reserve. It has been reported here (and I had heard this during a tour many years ago) that SR and Antique 107 were from the same lot of selected barrels with the difference simply being bottling proof. FYI, they sell about ten times more SR that the Antique 107, IIRC. So my guess is that you don't care for a young, low proof wheated bourbon. Therefor, a young, low proof SW wheated bourbon may not be your cup of tea either. In Texas, it's very common to see SR as the well bourbon in bars (although recent price increases have given Beam White a price advantage). When out, I'll often have the SR vs paying top dollar for a Woodford Reserve "top shelf" pour. But that's about the only time I drink SR.Randy
