Im still a newbie but if i had to choose now it would be wild turkey because its what ive had the most of and i enjoy it we'll see in a few weeks when i try the rest of these bottles so my opinion might change

There's so much out there that I like but I must say that I'm partial to the Van Winkles and the Wellers. I drink more of the latter for economic reasons, especially the Old Weller Antique, and tend to reserve my Van Winkle consumption for special occasions or quiet nights at home when I'm sitting alone listening to music.

What used to be Barton's was mine. Tom Moore BIB is usually consumed everyday in my house. It is owned by the Trace now.

2nd would be the Turkey

Four Roses is new in Tejas and I have not made that leap yet.

WLW stands for William Larue Weller, which is a barrel proof version of the Weller wheat recipe.

My favorite distillery is definitely Buffalo trace. trying to sort by "brand" can be confusing- only a few distilleries label almost all of their product under their own name. Wild Turkey and four roses immediately come to mind as two that almost exclusively put their name on the bottle.

For example: Evan Williams and Elijah Craig use the same mashbill recipe. The difference is in the age, and in selection. Both are made by heaven hill, but the labels on the bottle don't say that. A current bottling of Elijah Craig states that it was "Distilled and Bottled by the Elijah Craig Distillery Co," While Evan Williams is made by "Old Evan Williams Distillery."

If I didn't know anything about whiskies, would I assume that these two were completely different brands made by different distilleries?

There are plenty of other examples- Buffalo Trace uses the same mashbill to create Ancient Age, Elmer T. Lee Single barrel (often abbreviated ETL) and Rock Hill Farms. (I remember reading that info somewhere here on the site. If I'm wrong, please let me know- is Blanton's also part of this recipe? and where the heck does George T. Stagg fall into this lineup? which mashbill is that!?). To my knowledge none of these whiskies overtly state that they were made by Buffalo Trace.

Buffalo Trace also makes the whole Pappy/Weller line nowadays, but most of the people here are probably fans of Pappy-Weller from when it was produced by The Stitzel-Weller distillery. I have never tried any whiskey made by S-W (yet), and my favorite of what I have tried so far in that line is the Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old.

Wild Turkey puts the turkey name on (as far as I know) everything they make. Four roses does too- with the exception of Bulliet bourbon, and they produce that for a different company using a different (I think, someone please verify/deny me here) mashbill. Does that make it theirs?...

Really hard to say. As mentioned above, the brands run all over the place. Plus, I really like all the bourbons I've tried so far.

A couple years ago I would have said Wild Turkey. In a similar thread I may have. But with WTRR101 now just the ocational dusty and WTRB and WTKS shooting up in price, I've been drinking mostly BT products.

Buffalo Trace has 5 Recipes/mashbills:

Mashbill #1: Old Charter, Eagle Rare, George T. Stagg, Buffalo Trace. Considered "Low" Rye and 80% Corn.

Mashbill #2: Ancient Age, ET Lee, Rock Hill Farms, Hancock's Reserve, Blantons.

Considered "High" Rye and 60-70% Corn.

#3: Wheated Bourbons

#4: Rye Whiskies

#5: Rain Vodka

I think this is accurate. Please correct or add-to if needed.

For me, I really like them all. Almost equally well. Each has a different place in my line-up. But, if forced to choose, it would have to be Buffalo Trace.

That would be a shame. The first generation packaging of the Russel's Reserve 90 proof DID say Wild Turkey on it, sideways, right above the sideways label that read "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 45% alc/vol" I know the original RR101 clearly stated "Wild Turkey" on it... damn shame if they are debadging.

I haven't looked at the current packaging that closely...I really actually had a lot of respect for Wild Turkey for labeling everything as their own- It makes it so much easier for beginners to think to themselves "I really liked that, I'll try X, which is also made by them!"

Based upon what I have tasted myself, I'd agree with you- it just makes me even more frustrated with the sheer amount of mis-information that is all over the internet! I've read sites that have called both Eagle Rare and GTS "high rye" whiskies, and neither one of them tastes super high rye to me. I just bought my first bottle of Stagg last week, and have tried it neat and with varying amounts of water. I can maybe detect more rye than the current bottling of ER I have, but it isn't like ETL or birthday bourbon "rye high."

I like that Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey brand, nearly every bottle seems to have that on it.

Hmmm... It's a hard call... and actually for me 'brand' has little to do with taste in this situation. I'm going to say Turkey, only because when I was a kid in Kansas, all the older guys and folks I looked up to seemed to have a bottle some sort of WT in their house. I sat with my art teacher and always saw the turkey on the counter in the other room. I enjoy the classic rustic look of the turkey bottles (lets forget about RR for a moment) as well.

However, when I go to the store for something, it's rarely a WT offering. I'm always checking dates on RB and KS, but walk home with something from Buffalo Trace. Buffalo Trace doesn't have the same FEELING as WT does to me, but I enjoy a lot of their offerings a bit more.

I would have to say that my favorite brands are:

#1. A tie between Buffalo Trace and Van Winkle (in case you consider Van Winkle a separate distillery). I like all the Weller variations, BT, ETL, ER10/90, The BTAC, and of course Pappy 20, Lot B, Pappy 15, ORVW 10/107 and 10/90.

#2. Also a tie. Four Rose and Wild Turkey. I like FRSB, Mariage, and WTRB, WTRR 10/90, and WT 8 export.

I have and like others, but the brands above are definitely what takes up most of the room in my cabinet. Joe

If I were limited to only these I would have no complaints.

This is a much more difficult question than it would appear. The only brand to which I am loyal is Wellers 107 (aka Antique) but even then, I shy away from bottles after 06 and won't buy anything 08 or newer. So I'm brand loyal to 07 and older OWA, I guess. I also love Weller 12 year so maybe Weller is the brand that I can afford. But I don't care about Special Reserve at all.

If I had to pick one distillery, it would be Buffalo Trace. Unless we can count defunct distilleries whose product still exists, in which case it's Stitzel-Weller, by far.

But if we're talking about a brand, it has to be Van Winkle. Shame it's too expensive for me to drink often.

The whole bourbon industry is probably more interconnected than an Alabama trailer park!
