McKenna SB BIB

Anyone got any thoughts on it? Never had any of the previous iterations, it's 10 years, 100 proof and the bottle's kinda cheesy, but still could be some good juice in there...

Had a good bit at the KBF this past year and I really enjoyed it. I have also picked up some that is on my list to open here shortly.

I believe it's the only single barrel bib on the market, so that's pretty unique in it's own right. Rumor has it there are some other distilleries looking at doing something similar. If you can get it for a reasonable price (~30) it's definitely worth trying. Also, it varies by barrel, but I also enjoy HH products, so take all this for what it's worth.

I have a bottle that I bought in Kentucky in 2005. Yes, it is good juice, and it wasn't too expensive, either. It is good enough that it is one of a few bottles I hold back for special occasions.

I got a bottle of the McKenna 10 SB BIB for my birthday this year and I thought it was very good. That being said, I would consider it very comparable to the Evan Williams SB & EC12, all of which share a very similar flavor and when they're good, are great.

Since a single-barrel by definition fills all of the one-season, one-distillery, one-distiller requirements of BIB, calling a single barrel BIB is kind of gilding the lily. The McKenna is Heaven Hill and has never gotten much traction compared to some of the other HH premiums. If you see it at a good price, it's worth getting.

I went thru a bottle some years ago and I can't remember what it was like.

But since I have been getting into EC 12 & 18 and Parker's Heritage here lately I am going to scope one out.

Agreed. It's a 10 y/o SB from HH. Which is not a bad thing, not by a long shot.:grin:

Might be interesting to compare newer ones to older ones, though. Since the EWSB 2000 is now DSP-1 distillate, the McKenna shouldn't be too far behind.

For those who have had both, how does it rate vs the Ezra B 12 year single barrel?

I've had two HMSBs, a '94 and a '95. Both were excellent. I have a couple more bottle bunkered.

I too would love to hear any feedback on Ezra B. I've not had it before. I'm assuming at 12 yrs it's positioned at a higher price point.

The Ezra-B 12 y/o that I had recently was better than the McKenna SB. In PA they sell Ezra 12 for 25 bucks. A real buy.

Had a bottle over the Summer and liked it alot, so bought another.

Sweet toasted carmel flavor with a mild spicey kick. It doesn't have that POW factor like OGD 114 but a nice, easy sipping flavor that lasts awhile. Looking foward to opening that 2nd bottle.

That's a pretty nice description. You're right, it doesn't kick you in the teeth like some of our favorites, but it's not shy, either. Given the proof, it's a more potent dram than EWSB, and every bit as refined.

Hmm, that might be a nice tasting theme - HH single barrels: EWSB, HM, Ezra B, and Elijah Craig 18yr. Am I missing any?
