Some Help, Please

I shop at a handful of stores here. I buy my everyday pours and keep an eye out for the special stuff. I've never seen any VW product except one bottle of Lot B. I bought it.

Today, I stop at a one of my regular stores, and I couldn't believe what I saw. :bigeyes:

- ORVW 10/107 ($39)

- PVW 15 ($65)

- PVW 20 ($100)

- Woodford Reserve Seasoned Oak ($87)

- Jefferson's Presidential Reserve ($88)

I picked up a a bottle of PVW 15. It was something I had wanted to get for a long time, the recent thread on it notwithstanding.

So, I have two questions. First, how do these prices compare to what you are seeing? For reference, here are some sample prices of other brands.

- MM ($25)

- BT ($27)

- EWSB ($30)

- WT 101 ($22)

- ETL ($31)

- WR ($30)

- KC ($30)

- OWA ($21)

My second question is, which should I get first? For the record, I like most bourbons I have tried, but I tend to prefer sweeter pours.

- PVW 15 ($--) (not available, but I bought one for $50)

For that price...hmmm... the JPS is good and interesting, but not sure it is worth the price tag. The Pappy 20 may be good to grab while its still SW and $100 isn't insane. Some places are FAR above that.

Those prices are similar to or slightly below those in MI.

What to buy next: You could go almost any direction and it would be good. What are your bourbon tasting experiences? If you have a lot of experience, I'd go upper shelf. If not, I'd go more mid shelf and develop a palate. If money is not a big concern, I'd find some BTAC Stagg and Weller are favorites.

Will, I'm still developing my palate. I actually have a bottle each of 09 Weller and Stagg and plan to open those down the road along with any other premium bottles I get. I want to get a little better at tasting before I go for the high-end stuff. My objective is to pick up stuff I don't see available very often, which seems like most premium bottles here in CT.

BT, WT, ETL, OWA, KC, MM all have merits and are affordable.

Perform dental hygiene like a hygienist and have a taste comparison.

I'm serious about dental hygiene before bourbon, I discovered this by accident and was surprised by how much better bourbon tasted.

Forget the prices. They will depend on local laws.

What to try next?

Of the choices presented, I would say: go for BT, ETL. EWSB (depending on the year), or OWA.

The others you can find at most bars in the US anytime you want to try them

That's an excellent price on the WRMC compared to some other areas. But if you've never had PVW 20yo, you need to.

FWIW, I'd skip the PVW 20 and JPS (too woody and over-priced) and go with the other two.

You have three Van Winkles, one of which you bought, plus a Stitzel-Weller Jefferson, so those four are all really different branches of the same tree.

The winner, then, for which-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-others, at least, is the Woodford Reserve. You have four products that are all pretty similar and one that is thoroughly unique.

On the other hand all of them, except the Van Winkle 10, are "out there" in the range of bourbons. Only you can decide if you're ready for them, experience-wise.

I looked back to see what prices I paid for ORVW 10-107 and ORVW 15-107, the last time I bought them. I bought them in the PALCB (when they still had a decent selection of bourbon) for $17.50 for the 10-107 and $27.50 for the ORVW 15-107. That may have been about 4 or 5 years ago. I remember at the time the PALCB was getting rid of them. Hey, we got plenty of Red Stag. :hot: :hot:

That's a good price on the PVW 15 and I would buy all they had. The thread you reference is probably the one I started. BT has bent over backwards to take care of that bottle for me.

The JRPS is $81 here, WRSO is about the same, I paid $77 for PVW20 (Thanks Erich!), and nobody has PVW10 here. On your second list, every bottle is $1-2 less here, excepting the MM and BT. On sale, BT is $18 here. At Sams' Club, MM is right around $20. I might buy a bottle to use in Rons 4 Grain some day.

What should you buy? Probably the OWA, ETL, PVW.

What would I buy? OWA, ETL, ORVW10.

What would I definately pass? BT at that price, JRPS, EWSB, KC and if by WR you mean Weller Reserve or Weller 12, I would pass those too. I can buy Weller 12 for $17 so $30 sounds crazy high.

I agree completely. After brushing and flossing and rinsing with warm water, I swish something like EWB around and wait a few minutes before attempting to understand a bourbon.

PVW20 is probably my favorite special pour right now. $100 is a good price where i am, but i'm in NYC. Woodford's MC always seem to play to mixed reviews here, but I like that they're trying different variants, and I really enjoyed their sweet mash bottle last year. I think Chuck's right in terms Woodford is a different tree altogether, but i'd also snap up the PVW20 at that price, b/c G-d knows how long it'll be before the price of that doubles.

Right there with you, Joe. Walked into a potential good new spot (need to find something after LeNell was pushed out), and found a great staff person who knew her bourbons. They're selling the ORVW 10/90 for what I bought a bottle of ORVW 15 for two years ago, with the PVW 15 going for as much as I got my first bottle of Pappy 20. All of their other prices were not bad! But this just got me annoyed.

Thanks again to all for the input. I decided to just go with the PVW 15 for now. If I do go with any of the others, it'll probably be the WR Seasoned Oak or PVW 20, though either would be tough given my budget.

Try them put them back away for a few months try them again. Put them back away.... Only you know how your pallet is developing. But those are good prices and you may not be able to get those again at that price. The SW juice which both of them are is about history. Just my 2 cents worth.
