Party Source and BT have released two new experimental bottlings:

The first is a straight rye finished in a French oak barrel from a California dessert wine. The second is a wheated bourbon finished in a straight rye barrel. Both are barrel-proof and sold in the familiar BTEC 375 ml bottles.

Wow! The Rain Vodka Company keeps trying, good for them.

Maybe one day they'll send some BTAC up to the Mitten.

Let it Rain.

So this is Weller SR finished in Saz barrels?

It's 8 yo BT wheated bourbon which certainly implies WSR / OWA. The rye barrel is an 8 yo old implying Baby Saz.

I tried this for the first time yesterday. On entry, it tastes like OWA (probably influenced by the high 127 barrel proof). At mid-palette, the normal wheated softness starts to shift to rye notes. The finish is BIG and long... a crescendo of rye spiciness and cinnamon. Very Saz-like.

This is the first of the BTEC (that I've tried) that I really like and would like to see in a regular bottling. A very nice and a very interesting pour.

I atteneded a BT Experimental Bourbon tasting at the Party Source last night. The event was hosted by BT Master Distiller, Harlen Wheatley and The Party Source's spirits aficionado, Jay Erisman.

After sampling two of the previously-released BT Double Barreled experimentals, Harlen brought out a few surprises. The first was some white dog of a six grain bourbon experiment. Hard to describe the taste from a small sample but it was clearly different than any white dog I've tried. Harlen says to watch for it to be released in about six or seven years.

The second surprise was samples from two barrels made from a single, specially-selected white oak. Both were filled with standard recipe BT but at two different entry proofs (105 and 125). Still a work in process.

Beaming like a proud Pappa, Jay wrapped-up the night with the public debut of his first two BT / Party Source experimentals (mentioned earlier in this thread). As posted earlier, I love the wheated bourbon finished in a straight rye barrel. This was my first taste of the rye finsihed in a French oak dessert wine barrel. The rye definitely is front and center but is enveloped in lush fruity tones. Easily the best wine-finished bourbon to date.

The really exciting news of the night was that these are just the first two BT / Party Source experimentals --- more are planned and apparently at least one is in process.

Hats off to BT and Jay and the Party Source for continuing to push the knowledge envelope. I'm looking forward to what's coming down the road.

Jay also brought these two Party Source BTEC to the Bourbon Society Repeal Day Party. It was quite the gesture. They were both quite nice. I'm hoping to get up that way soon enough to grab some before they are gone.

Jay is truly one of the great innovators in this business, a guy who genuinely loves whiskey. He is one of the really terrific people in the business too. Just as Buffalo Trace shows everybody what a distillery can do, Jay shows what a retailer can do.
