I think this is pretty cool and thought that everyone here would appreciate it too. The Party Source in Kentucky just sent me two new Buffalo Trace Experimental Collections that THEY formulated, in conjunction with Buffalo Trace.

The one is rather intriguing. It's a wheated bourbon that was finished in a fresh rye cask. My blog posting on it goes into more detail and includes a label.

I think this new release sets three precedents:

1) It's the firest BTEC that was coordinated by a retailer.

2) These BTEC whiskeys are bottled at barrel proof, not 90 proof like the standard distillery bottlings

3) It's the first release that I am aware of that has taken a wheated bourbon and imparted rye notes in it by finishing it in a rye cask.

I don't know if other retailers are going to do the same thing with Buffalo Trace. (I haven't asked them yet.) But, if they do, we could be seeing some very interesting whiskeys (good or maybe not so good) popping up at various retailers (and maybe even bars and restaurants) in the future.

It's good that they are expanding the program. Props to Mr. Jay Eiserman for getting this off the ground. I exchanged many an email with Jay and got to meet him at KBF at the Gazebo.

Scott: "Rob, who was that guy you were talking to @ Party Source?"

Me: "Jay Eiserman"

Scott: >points<

I tasted some with Jay on Sat.

IIRC, the nose and taste are like a good wheater, then the rye barrel kicks in at the finish.

It's good, glad I got a taste.

jburlowski, thanks for the link. I missed that one the first time around.

I tasted both last night. I like the wheated bourbon finished in the rye cask. I'm not too crazy about the rye finished in the dessert wine...
