BBQ+Bourbon
Should I buy the rest of these? I found a half dozen JW Dant BIB handles (plastic) and figured I would try one for the hell of it. Doesn't have to be great for $23 a handle. So I just got home from work and I flipped the bottle around; DSP KY 31. Interesting! There is some black printing on the bottle 030391615. Does that indicate it's bottled March 3 1991?The juice is not bad at first sip. Nothing tremendous, young, one dimensional. Absolutely nothing stands out here. But it is old HH juice and people here seem to believe that KY 31 is worth buying.

TNbourbon
Okay, an admission, and an admission:pope: : I'm one of the folks who started paying attention to DSP #s, etc., when purchasing bottles. To date, there are still some #s/combinations that will be automatic 'buys' -- though waaayyyy fewer and farther between. Additionally --though, I suppose, the possibility of finding a hidden gem will never really end -- it really doesn't matter that much anymore. Anything worth plucking has been plucked. Sorry, y'all're just too late! That said, as Greg says, I buy what I want to drink. If the DSP means nothing in particular to me, then I don't pay it any mind. I'm not buying the label, I'm buying the whiskey...
BBQ+Bourbon
I disagree with your statement 'anything worth plucking has been plucked' since I bought a gold vein OWA for $16 a few months ago and found a WTT with the peacock bottle for $70 and passed it up.However, in the case of this one, the HH heritage of the bottle doesn't make up for it's bland profile. You guys have convinced me that there is no need to rush back to pick up the remaining bottles.

You guys have convinced me that there is no need to rush back to pick up the remaining bottles.Well, again, it's a matter of perspective: OWA in gold-veined bottles were a regular issue in my memory -- so I don't particularly consider that a 'great find' though, granted, I'd buy it at reasonable prices, if found. But, if I never find another one, well -- been there, done that! What is "WTT"? I assume that it's Wild Turkey, and that the 'peacock' you note is actually a turkey, but that's an acronym with which I am unfamiliar. Thus, I have no idea whether or not $70 is a good buy.Understand, you are free to disagree with me at your leisure. Heck, I often disagree with myself tomorrow what I opine today! But, I think our particular circumstance, generation, and experience define what each of us considers worth 'plucking' from today's environment. As for me, I 'pluck' little, and buy what I enjoy at the moment. unclebunk
Perhaps it would be better to say that "most of what's worth plucking has been plucked." There are still treasures to be found, though you may have to hunt for them at estate sales, bowling alleys, etc. rather than at little corner liquor stores in shitty neighborhoods (where I've had some great dusty hunting success, by the way). If it's new to you, it's good for you. Buy it and enjoy!
smokinjoe
You and I see this differently, no doubt. To me, finding a desirable bourbon that I haven't had is an adventure. Good bourbon is scarce around here save for a few current mid-shelf products so I never pass on a less common bottle. Your collection and experience are undoubtedly greater than mine, which may account for some of our differences. That said, if you find any gold vein OWA, I'd sure love to have it! The WTT is Wild Turkey Tribute and yes it's a turkey. It just reminds me of the NBC peacock more than a turkey. You won't be impressed by that one, but there are guys who would love to have it. I have a bottle from HH but have not opened it.I pick-up any UD Dant BIB I find. If it says Frankfort or Lousiville or both, it goes home with me. Super tasty stuff. Not complex, just a solid bourbon with lots of full flavors. I found the Bardstown expressions to taste like a wood tongue depressor.

He is a walking compilation of DSP's and related information.I miss Jeff AKA Mozilla to.But alas, he could not stomach the trash that gets posted here on SB.com in the "Off Topic" and "Politics, Religion and Controversy" threads. So he took a hike. He's not the first and I'm sure not the last.I can't for the life of me see why people want to post here what they hear on the Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck radio/TV as shows their original opinions. They are just entertainment shows that are not to be taken seriously. Now, now -- no snarking! I was impressed enough to buy about a dozen of that one, though I traded/passed on most of them. I think I drank through two bottles. If you look back far and deeply enough, I believe I have a review of it somewhere on here. You'd be surprised, perhaps, to learn that my "collection" is currently about a dozen unopened bottles, and another dozen or so that have been 'popped'. It's almost embarrassing after once having more than 100 different labels (not bottles -- labels!) of bourbon displayed, and several hundred bottles altogether: http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=59222&postcount=97 But, out of all those bottles, there have probably been only about two dozen that I passed along to others without ever sampling an example (and most of those were not the ones we keep talking about here). That might help explain why I'm not looking to find the 'adventure' you're having -- I'm fortunate to already have had that adventure. So, I DO understand -- really! Many long-time members know that I was a newpaper reporter/writer for 25 years, and am prone to hyperbolize in order to highlight, emphasize, or 'controversial-ize' what I post. It's a bit of self-amusement. Please don't take it personally -- or even, always, literally! -- and be assured I won't (usually -- unless you make a pointed and trivial habit of it, as a departed SB.com habitue mentioned in this thread, who is NOT missed by me, regularly did) be offended by your disagreement. No snark intended, my friend. I have read your posts and am aware that you are much more experienced than I. It should go without saying that two people of good conscience can disagree and that's what we have here. There is nothing personal about disagreement, and no personal conflict within a disagreement. It's probably accurate to say that bourbon is as ubiquitous in TN as cows are in Kansas! Living in Missouri, consuming good bourbon requires a bit of obsession. Would you believe that WTRR101 is still available to me off the local shelf at original price? (Plus, I never cared for it all that much!) Now, true, the ND Old Taylor I'd take in a heartbeat at an un-inflated price. Good find. ...It's probably accurate to say that bourbon is as ubiquitous in TN as cows are in Kansas!.. Ah, now I have company in 'ubiquity'. Did you know that, in almost 200,000 posts here at SB.com, only 83 contain the word "ubiquitous" -- and SIX of them are MINE! See, it's not that hard to find a commonality! I was pretty surprised. I left a 1.75L bottle of Old charter 10 year 86 proof with a (fake?) tax strip behind at the store... it was 39.99, and I'm debating picking that one up.EDIT: I also believe I'm interested in whereabouts you live, if there's still RR101 around to be had...? I don't care for the current Turkeys, but the older stuff is pretty darn good. thankfully, we all have different opinions when it comes to bourbon, or this would be a boring world. I had a bottle from 92 and it was nothing special. Two current EWB handles would be a better buy for the money. The Proprieters' Reserve is said to be dandy, and the Classic 12/90 is plenty good. BBQ+Bourbon
Found a great use for this one while I was firing up my gas grill for the first time since last winter. There was some accumulated funk around the body of the grille that I wanted to get rid of. Hmmm... 100 proof burns! Dumped a bunch of this bottle around the grille to get the funky burning and it worked great! After the alcohol burned out the funk burned to ash. Winter time is no time to be monkeying with a charcoal grill!
