Should I buy the rest of these? I found a half dozen JW Dant BIB handles (plastic) and figured I would try one for the hell of it. Doesn't have to be great for $23 a handle. So I just got home from work and I flipped the bottle around; DSP KY 31. Interesting!

There is some black printing on the bottle 030391615. Does that indicate it's bottled March 3 1991?

The juice is not bad at first sip. Nothing tremendous, young, one dimensional. Absolutely nothing stands out here.

But it is old HH juice and people here seem to believe that KY 31 is worth buying.

Okay, an admission, and an admission:pope: : I'm one of the folks who started paying attention to DSP #s, etc., when purchasing bottles. To date, there are still some #s/combinations that will be automatic 'buys' -- though waaayyyy fewer and farther between. Additionally --though, I suppose, the possibility of finding a hidden gem will never really end -- it really doesn't matter that much anymore. Anything worth plucking has been plucked. Sorry, y'all're just too late!

That said, as Greg says, I buy what I want to drink. If the DSP means nothing in particular to me, then I don't pay it any mind. I'm not buying the label, I'm buying the whiskey...

Perhaps it would be better to say that "most of what's worth plucking has been plucked." There are still treasures to be found, though you may have to hunt for them at estate sales, bowling alleys, etc. rather than at little corner liquor stores in shitty neighborhoods (where I've had some great dusty hunting success, by the way). If it's new to you, it's good for you. Buy it and enjoy!:grin:

Good bourbon is scarce around here save for a few current mid-shelf products so I never pass on a less common bottle. Your collection and experience are undoubtedly greater than mine, which may account for some of our differences.

That said, if you find any gold vein OWA, I'd sure love to have it! The WTT is Wild Turkey Tribute and yes it's a turkey. It just reminds me of the NBC peacock more than a turkey. You won't be impressed by that one, but there are guys who would love to have it.

I pick-up any UD Dant BIB I find. If it says Frankfort or Lousiville or both, it goes home with me. Super tasty stuff. Not complex, just a solid bourbon with lots of full flavors. I found the Bardstown expressions to taste like a wood tongue depressor.

You'd be surprised, perhaps, to learn that my "collection" is currently about a dozen unopened bottles, and another dozen or so that have been 'popped'. It's almost embarrassing after once having more than 100 different labels (not bottles -- labels!) of bourbon displayed, and several hundred bottles altogether:

It should go without saying that two people of good conscience can disagree and that's what we have here. There is nothing personal about disagreement, and no personal conflict within a disagreement.

It's probably accurate to say that bourbon is as ubiquitous in TN as cows are in Kansas! Living in Missouri, consuming good bourbon requires a bit of obsession.

The RR101 was 26 dollars. the Taylor was a 1L, and it was 15. I was pretty surprised. I left a 1.75L bottle of Old charter 10 year 86 proof with a (fake?) tax strip behind at the store... it was 39.99, and I'm debating picking that one up.

EDIT: I also believe I'm interested in whereabouts you live, if there's still RR101 around to be had...? I don't care for the current Turkeys, but the older stuff is pretty darn good. thankfully, we all have different opinions when it comes to bourbon, or this would be a boring world.

No need to go back for the OC. I had a bottle from 92 and it was nothing special. Two current EWB handles would be a better buy for the money.

The Proprieters' Reserve is said to be dandy, and the Classic 12/90 is plenty good.

Found a great use for this one while I was firing up my gas grill for the first time since last winter. There was some accumulated funk around the body of the grille that I wanted to get rid of. Hmmm... 100 proof burns! Dumped a bunch of this bottle around the grille to get the funky burning and it worked great! After the alcohol burned out the funk burned to ash.

Winter time is no time to be monkeying with a charcoal grill!
