A bit of humor for me from my visit to the dentist a few days ago. Now, anytime you can leave the dentist with a little humor, the better off you are.....lol! Anyhow, after he got through pulling an abcessed tooth, he took a moment to write me an Rx for pain. Thru the gauze I asked him about using bourbon instead. He smiled & followed with a short laugh and said, "well, if you do, I would advise going for the good stuff - Maker's - and leave the Fightin Cock on the shelf.....after going through this today, you might as well get the best!". Now, first off, those were his words and thoughts, not necessarily mine....lol. Second, without intending to offend any MM fans (I like it OK and would not turn it down), I was thinking more along the lines of Stagg, WLW or WTRB when I asked him the question. As for his 'diss' of Fightin Cock, never had any myself but might be a consideration over plenty of others out there......lol!

bourbon seems to take care of my persistent toothache too. What a good dentist you have!!

I use 2-4 oz of medicine a day for prevention. Alcohol kills cavity bugs. And no, I am not his dentist. Prescription bourbon is Van Winkle. You can substitute Weller as a good generic. Fighting cock would come from the local witch doctor. tim

I've been taking a glass of bourbon every day to avoid toothaches and so far, it's worked just fine. An occasional Sazerac Rye will also bring a sparkle to your teeth.

After I was in a minor car accident as a teenager, my mom asked the doctor if she should give me anything for pain. He suggested a cocktail!

And she did.

I would be just as likely to reach for Makers and I would be for Fighting Cock.

When my head had cleared a bit on the way home that day, this thought did come to my mind as well. However, again, don't mean to slander MM in any way. It is funny how so many mainstream folk automatically think of MM as the premium bourbon. All I can say is that like JD, they have done a heckuva marketing job over the years!

I have a severe case of a rare form of arthritis. The medication was tearing up my cast iron stomach so I quit taking it. When I told my Dr, he said "what do you do for the pain?" I replied three oz of good whisky nightly before supper. He laughed and said if it works, keep it up. So it's good for other pain beside toothaches.

I just hope you waited until the numbness was gone before taking that first drink. It'd be a shame to dribble your "medication" down your chin regardless of which brand.

Great stuff, guys. I've found beer to be a better stomach settler, but bourbon does good work on my head. Aleve is good for toothaches but it is not advised to drink alcohol when you're taking it. So I skip the Aleve.

Cheers!

You should have had the bourbon before the tooth was pulled and a good stiff pour afterwards as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

In the old days, whiskey was a standard remedy after a dentist visit. In a 1940's Raymond Chandler novel (maybe The Lady in the Lake?), detective Phillip Marlowe is checking out a house when he sees the curtain pulled aside in the neighboring house and sees an old lady (I was going to write "old biddy," but that wouldn't have been very PC) peeking out. He goes over to that house to talk to her, and she says something to the effect that he smells of alcohol (he is always drinking whiskey), and she doesn't approve of that and so won't talk to him. He explains that he had just been to the dentist, which mollifies her, and he gets the dope from her.

As recently as the mid 1960's (that is recently, isn't it?), my father had some minor dental surgery, and afterward, the dentist gave him a shot of what Dad described as "good rye." A few months later, the same dentist removed two of my wisdom teeth, and I asked him for a shot of whiskey. He turned me down, no doubt because I was only 18.
