I got my first whiskey-purchasing-related dirty look / snide comment from my wife this weekend! I guess I should clarify the title to this post, I have had plenty of non-whiskey related dirty looks. I found EC12 for $16 and brought home 4 bottles.

Her: "You don't even have room for those on your shelf" (I currently have a shelf on a small bookshelf in the living room with 7-10 bottles).

Me: "I'm going to bunker these in the basement. It's too good of a price to pass up."

Her: "bunker? in case there is a nuclear war?"

Me: " . . ."

Her: [dirty look].

In all seriousness though, she is fine with it, just giving me some well-deserved crap.

I think the best defense is a good offense (not to be confused with offensive). My wife has a few areas of interest in which she collects things. I try to be on the lookout for something she might like and hide it until the time is right. Then if one of those can't pass it up bargains appears at one of the local liquor outlets I can pull out the scorn diffuser. Sometimes it actually works. Just a thought. Proceed with caution.

I really don't share my purchases with my wife I just take them downstairs and put them in the cabinet. She does not pay attention to what is in there so I don't have to worry about increasing inventory.

I did tell her a few weeks ago I was going to the store to buy some booze and she asked "what about all that stuff you have in the basement". I explained to her how most of that was either out of production, not available in our state, limited release or a combination of the three.

She just said "ohh, ok" and that was that.

I've tried that approach too. It worked for me until there was no more room in the house for her stuff she drug home from yard sales. I think I'll supplement my stealth mode with the Scorn Diffuser.

I know that look.:smiley_acbt: It sure takes the joy out of a good dusty hunt.

I tell my wife my bunker in filled with "investment whisky". It has worked thus far!

The next time that happens, turn right around, walk out, and come back several hours later with a new big screen TV. She'll forget all about the EC12.

My collection of bottles has grown quickly over the last few months. I keep waitin' for the wife to say something, but she's been cool so far. She had been wanting a new cabinet for the home office so I went and bought her one. Ain't got many books in it so far, but it's making one darn fine liquor cabinet for the moment! :slappin:

First dirty look from the wife. Now thats funny. Probably the first of many. You know it's getting a little better when it's just a mild look of disdain. That may take a couple years or more though.

We probably need to form a spousal support group. Any volunteers?

At first I really liked your idea Chuck. Then I got to thinking about it. :skep: It would probably only lead to more dirty looks. I can just see people being accused of planning various sordid bourbon undertakings in our meetings. Dusty hunts, trades, case purchases, barrel purchases, etc.... Wait a second, we already do that now. Go figure. :slappin: Joe

Thank you for writing my post for me!! I do try to be reasonable though and try to hold off my buying binges for when I work alot of OT or get a bonus. Thank god I get my bonus in two weeks!! She doesn't mind as long is there is extra money.

I don't think my wife sees the logic where buying numerous bottles makes perfect fiscal sense. One has to look at the big picture over a large span of time or some crap like that.

My first bourbon related dirty look didn't come from me buying bottles. I had come home with three bottles and upon seeing them my wife gave me the "you don't have room for those" comment. The dirty look came the next day when I brought home a new bigger shelf.

My wife told me the other day -- "You either have to stop buying bottles or start drinking faster."

I didn't want to disappoint her, so I had another drink..

(I've been lurking for awhile soaking up the wealth of info this site offers)

It's not so much a dirty look that I get as it is a periodic inquiry or statement which happened yesterday for me. "You have a lot of money tied up in liquor. Just how much have you bought since we went to Kentucky." I usually just respond like a guilty little kid "Yeah, I have bought a bunch since we went out there."

The problem I've run into now is that I'm out of shelf space in the current liquor cabinet, so either I need to find some new storage space that won't draw any more attention than the current cabinet does. My wife might argue that I could just stop buying, but what fun would that be?

Bunkering bottles is really such a harmless hobby compared to some other activities you-all could be involved in--betting the mortgage payment at the track, whiling away hours at the bar, shooting up heroin, stashing yarn.

"Investment Whiskey" - Absolutely Brillant

So when you finish a few of those whiskies is it a "Whiskey Financial Crisis"

...stashing yarn.

Such a pernicious habit! I'll have to discuss this with my daughter.

The only question I have, is where did you find that price, and why didn't you share?

I think we have enough to form Bourbon Bunker's Dirty Looks Club Band!

InTheWater: I got it at Central City. EC12 is usually 19.99 there, and this weekend they had a 20% off coupon on their website. I think they are planning on having some sort of coupon every couple of weeks. FYI, they have a couple of scotch tastings coming up too. I'm not much of a scotch drinker, but its still fun to try different things.

I have an update. This is along the lines of the Scorn Diffuser method and on the first try it worked wonderfully.

My wife's cousin was visitng the US in Chicago and hasn't seen my wife in 30 years. Sensing an opportunity, I sent my wife on an all expenses paid vacation for three days to Chicago to visit her cousin. I made all the arrangements ensuring she got a direct flight and a very nice hotel room in the Marriot. I left her with security as they began divesting her of everything that had more than 3 ounces of liquid or gel. That took them a long time to get all that female survival gear out and I made a hasty retreat to every liquor store within fifty miles.

She returned in a wonderful mood and made a delightful meal. She has been so happy that she hasn't noticed how happy I am as well. Overly ecstatic husbands are a dead giveaway that something nebulous has taken place. But dang its hard to hide that grin brought on by a successful hunt for bourbon.

In October of last year, I got married for the first time at the age of 48. We have three kids, ages 9, 7, and 6. My wife totally understands my bourbon habit, especially with me being a new parent.....

I did get a dirty look a few weeks ago when I informed her I was giving up wine for Lent. I was promptly told it was going to be a long six weeks.....

Best solution - teach your wife to drink. She'll then wait patiently in the car while you shop during your travels, and occasionally come in with you and find something she wants to put on the counter.
