VICIII
I had a bottle of bourbon that was "McKenna", I think, anyway it was in a jug ceramic looking bottle. It just had a cork with tape over the top like Michigan State gives all the bottles that can be sold in the state. I am not sure if it was common bottle but in Michigan there is a list you can buy from but that is all. Not all liqueur is sold in Michigan, just what is on the states list.Anyway I grew up in Michigan and not live in FL. I was on my way up about 6 years ago when I asked a high end wine/spirits store for the Best Bourbon they have. I normally take up woodford reserve but want something different. The guy behind the counter just asked me if I could keep a secret and I said yes. Rang me up for $30.00 and handed me a "Jug" of a great bourbon. The Jug was light color on the bottom and had a darker top. The cork in the top was larger than a normal bottle top. I have looked all over to replace it and can not find it. The store I bought if from has "never heard of it"???? I am not sure if it was Not for sales in Michigan or if what it was. I have had Henry McKenna many times and it all came from a regular bottle and was different but close to what I am looking for.Have any of you ever heard of such a bourbon?? BourbonJoe
Years ago Henry McKenna and Ezra Brooks, among others, were sold in cork topped crocks. These are fairly common and I would think that one could buy an empty one (or even a full one) on E-Bay.Joe :usflag:
OscarV
Don't know about the jug version but here in MI (btw where in MI are/were you from?) you can get Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bottled In Bond for $29.99.The best price going for both a 1B and a BIB.Heaven Hill makes it for the USA and here's the odd thing about it, Four Roses owns the name for export, yeah, go figure. Josh
I've seen some of those old McKenna jugs on a shelf around here recently; some clod was asking $89 for them. I passed on them. The current issue bottled-in-bond ones are very well made whiskeys. The jugs are not made anymore, and I think they are probably from a different distillery from the current one (HH as mentioned above). BTW, Michigan doesn't use that tape anymore. cowdery
The Henry McKenna jug goes back almost 20 years, not long after Seagram's sold the brand to Heaven Hill. Except at first Heaven Hill only had the U.S. rights and Seagram's continued to sell McKenna overseas, in a ceramic jug, and the whiskey was made at Lawrenceburg. There may have been another McKenna jug but that's the one I know about.
bourbonv
Four Roses still owns the overseas rights to Henry McKenna. I helped Al Young with some research a few years back as they prepared to launch the brand in New Zealand.Mike Veach
PaulO
My father in law has an empty Henry McKenna jug that is different from the above picture. I don't have the jug in front of me, but I remember the writing is blue and it has some geometric folk art type designs on it. I think it is from the 1970s or early 1980s. I have tried the current 80 proof Henry McKenna. I thought it was ok for a well type of bourbon that cost $10.
