While out hunting yesterday Joshua and I noticed 2009 OFBB that was back in the original, and better looking, glass; however we both swore the 2009 was originally released in the replacement glass. You know, the uglier slighter slimmer and taller bottle. Just wondering if anyone else had noticed this as we both swore we'd seen it in the other glass.

I was under the impression that some of the 09 landed in the old glass, and then when it was gone switched over to the new style? I could be wrong, though.

Didn't all the 08 end up in new glass? It would seem weird if 09 went in old and not 08. I was really hoping that they got the supplier back or something because the new was just a horrific shape.

Hmm. was it 08 that fluctuated between the two, then? I've seen 08s on shelves right next to 07's, and they looked exactly the same. I didn't even realize that there was a "new" glass until I saw the 09 bottling.

all the 08s around here are in the "new glass" and all the 09s are in the "old glass".

The 2008 old glass version is fantastic bourbon - much better than the 2008 new glass. I have 14 of these in my bunker.

I know there was a glass issue that delayed release of I guess it was the 2008. I don't know what happened subsequently. I think the previous supplier went out of business but maybe someone was able to get their molds.

I know they weren't crazy about the new bottle so obviously they found a way to replace it with one that is either identical or nearly identical to the original.

I'm surprised to hear the 2009 appears to be in two different bottles, however, as they bottle all of the OFBB at one time. It's not like they did one run then subsequently got a different bottle and did a second run. It is possible that they got the new/old glass but decided to use up what they had of the new/new before switching back to it.

Thanks Chuck! I am hoping it is as you mentioned and they got the molds or something.

I have never been a fan of the shape for packaging and space reasons, but as a collection having them all lined up they look cool; therefore I hope they are back to the original glass and there will only be one oddball.

Do I detect a tongue in that cheek?

I wouldn't know myself - I gave up on Birthday Bourbon after about the 2006 release. People tell me it got better right after - just like my uncle who gave up his 49ers season tickets after a decade of begging people to go to the game with him. The last straw was when they hired some guy from Stanford as head coach...

I saw them! They were lined up alphabetically according to height, backlit and oiled so that they glistened in the dim light. Turns out the super secret bunker is hard to access - you have to drain the hot tub first, then lift the grate on the underground smoker, but it's a short crawl once you get in the tunnel.

That's not the way I got there. It really wasn't as hard as you might think.

Wade is correct. The old glass 2008 is far better than the new glass 2008.

Just different corks.

Back to reality..I purchased both the '08 and '09 OFBB in Sept of each year(when issued) and the former was in the odd(new) bottle and the latter was in the same bottle as all pre'08 releases.

IIRC the 08 was delayed due to "glass issues". Perhaps the new vendor didn't work out as planned.

Scott,

Now that I think about it, you are correct. The 2008 was delayed for a few months because of the glass issue. Now I remember I had to order it in Dec 2008.

My recollection of what happened in '08 is that the bottle they had been using became unavailable because the maker went out of business. They delayed the release while they hunted for and tested a similar bottle. I also remember they had trouble with it on the bottling line, which contributed to the delay and to their displeasure with that bottle. Apparently they either found a more similar substitute, or the previous producer was reconstituted, or someone got the previous producers molds.

I must be the one who is insane, then. Next time I see another 08 I'll take a closer look.

I haven't had the 2006 birthday bourbon, but I've had 05 and 07 and found both to be good. Didn't realize that more than just the 09 bottling was hated by so many people.

Here's how I remember the OFBB series (and my memory has holes in it):

2002: The one many would put in the bourbon hall of fame

2003: The year of two releases (or am I confusing this with Stagg?)

2004: The conspicuously younger bottling that many reviled

2005: The same as 2004, but a year older???

2006:

2007:

2008: The second bottling that seems to have a place in the bourbon hall of fame

2009: Many unkind remarks

After looking in the bunker, I believe I had the 2003-2005 and never thought any of them were as good as DSP 414 Forester, so I stopped buying them.

2003 had a fall and spring(of 1990) both released in the fall of 2003. The spring was exceptional, full of rich fruit and caramel.

Interesting, I found the 2003 to be unimpressive. I think this is probably the one series that has the most wide spread opinion. I liked the 2006 and the 07 (probaby more), not Spring 03 or the 04 and can't recall if I have tasted the 05. As Roger mentioned the 2002 is a top bourbon and I have not tasted the fall 2003.
