Ewsb 2000

Hey all,

Wondering what your opinions were about EWSB 2000. This is the first bottle I have had, as I have been drinking 98's and 99's. I must say I was very underwhelmed. Poured my first glass, and the initial smell was of tasty caramel. Then I took my first sip. The first word that popped into my head was 'chemical'. After a few more sips, actually poured it out (something I have rarely done with any bourbon).

I hope maybe after it gets some air to it I'll see some changes. If not, I'm probably going to dump it down the drain......

Anyone else notice this taste?

I greatly prefer the 2000 to the 1998 and 1999, but that's why we say "your mileage may vary."

They are, however, unquestionably different, probably the greatest deviation over a couple year period ever.

The 2000 may grow on you.

Don't give up hope, I've had a few bottles I wasn't overly fond of... but they either grew on me or they opened up to fantastic bourbons. The biggest one was a bottle of ER101 that tasted VERY off... but as it opened up and sat a bit became pretty great stuff.

I disliked the OF repeal bourbon at first, but it's grown on me... hang in there!

I have a bottle of the 2000, and like it alot... I'd let it sit for awhile, try again later. The alcohol bite seems to separate itself from the the other flavors. I do get a little pepper spice on the tip of my tongue that's a bit sharp...

Thanks for all the responses. I tried again a few days after opening, and I noticed an improvement. The chemical taste had subsided, and it seemed to be a bit smoother. On the road now, so I'm looking forward to getting home and havin' another 'snort'....:cool: .

I too found a pronunced chemical nose and taste (rubbing alcohol?) when I first opened my EWSB 2000 (a trait that I had never seen in any of the previous releases that I have tried). After a few days open it was gone and replaced by a much more pleasant (I would say minty/fruity) nose.

I was going to post in the deal section but since I'm already typing, the Montgomery County MD LCB currently has EWSB on sale for $17.99 so it's your chance to stock up on the 2000! (7/7 - 7/13). I don't live there, but the prices more than make up for the gas I use!

That was the OFBB lie Erik said. And, you are correct there. I have had 5 samples from all over and it still not my bag

The EVSB vary a lot from what I have tasted. I loved the '97 I had, then the one I got in KY from EW was thin, hot and meager.

I hated my '98, but either Reid's or Greg's was very good.

There should almost be a bigger designation on the SBs (1 through X) so that folks can them out easier. I know they are already marked, but why not designate the total number made

Because they don't know. EWSB is not a limited edition. It's a run of production product. They will make as much of the 2000 as they can sell until a cut-off date, at which point they'll switch over to the 2001. They won't know how many of the 2000 they're going to make until they've made the last one.

Went out and bought a bottle of this tonight and I still like it. Not overly complex but nice and enjoyable. Probably my second favorite HH product after RITT BIB. I'm not overly fond of their product line but this works for me.

I wouldn't go that far. They do make an annual selection of a particular batch of barrels but they don't necessarily intend for that supply to run out. If they do run out of suitable barrels for a given release, they will switch over sooner to the next release.

For a non-single barrel product they dump hundreds of barrels at a time. They can't do that with single barrel products. They have multiple single barrel dump tanks but they don't have hundreds of them. It's a slow, mostly hand process. It's being single barrel that makes it special, not being one of X. And, of course, it ultimately is a limited edition in that once the last bottle of 2000 has been filled (which has not happened yet) there will be a finite number. It's just not limited in the way the BT Antinques are, for example, where the barrels are selected and dumped, the product is bottled, goes into the warehouse, and that's it for the year. EWSB is a different model.

In our chronological tasting last night we found a licorice taste in the 2000 not present in the previous years; perhaps that's the chemical taste others have noted. More notes to follow...

Finally opened my bottle of the 2000. I really like it. To me, it's got a nice combination of wood, spice, and sweetness.
