Summer Sippers

I find that during the summer I tend to drink lighter, lower proof whiskeys. These have been my favorites this summer:

Four Roses

Virginia Gentleman

J.T.S Brown (on the rocks or with a dash or two of Benedictine)

Old Forester

Ancient Ancient Age 10 y/o

Jim Beam Black

Maker's Mark

Baby Saz

And, slightly off topic, I've also been enjoying my first bottle of Powers 12. Surprisingly good.

If I'm thirsty for some bourbon, any will do, regardless of the season. I too like the Powers 12 as well as Tullamore 12 and Jamesons 12. Regular versions of these are very good, the 12 year versions even better. They are all made the same place but each is different and excellent!

I go lighter, at least to start with in summer as well. 70s Beam, 70s Old Fitz Prime, Four Roses Small Batch... things of that nature are nice when it's warmer outside, then once it cools off going to the higher proofs works well.

I never really thought about it but I tend to go with somewhat lighter sippers too, without consciously choosing to do so. Then I bust out the WLW's and PHC's in the fall when fall and the football season rolls around. (Not too far off now. Hooray!) I also lean towards wheaters and/or slightly sweeter pours as well when it's hot out, so lately it's been Virginia Gentleman, Maker's Mark, ORVW 10/90, VOB 90 and Old Forester. Oh, and lots of Rittenhouse 90 with ginger ale over ice. Killer! Hope you all are having a great summer.

Summer I do more bourbon-and-Coke, so it's usually cheaper stuff (EWBL, VOB 90). I say "usually" because at the moment I'm using Buck for this, until it's gone.

We had the hottest summer here in quit a wile and I had OGD 114 on the rocks 2 days in a row on the peak. It tasted good and refreshing in the heat, but the melted ice killed it if I drank to slow.

The hotter it gets the less I drink, period. That said, when its not ungodly hot, some of my favorite lower proof bourbons and ryes, are perennial favorites. Baby saz and Buffalo Trace are fine examples.

I tend to drink more Irish whiskey in the hotter months than any other time of year. Standard Jamison's on the rocks would be the be a good example, as would Redbreast neat, if I'm not dehydrated at the end of the workday or we got got rained out, easy day etc.

It's really hot here and frankly I can not think of drinking my bourbon neat at room temp. these days. I prefer bourbon&coke or fortified lemonade with lots of ice Anyway, my bourbon stays the same: Jim Beam Black. Actually, I do not have many more choices at all.

With the heat in the 90's here all week, I've been looking for some lighter bourbons...

I've found that I like Wathan's alot more in the summertime.

Also I just broke open my first Pure KY XO which has been great. I think it has one of the best noses...

I too reach for lighter bourbons but I also do some mixing for something refreshing at the same time. Once cold weather begins to settle in, I gravitate towards higher proof bourbon and other whiskies.

After the reawakening of the 6/10 BOTM thread, I think I'm going to grab a bottle of Fighting Cock -- not a "sipper" per se, but I think it will be a good mixer for some of the cocktails I've been working on.

It is a typical sweltering August in DC, and I am finding I just need to cool off and Bourbon just sometimes doesn't do the trick..

So I discovered the Milk Punch and that works like a charm. But I think I'd rather enjoy the whiskey when things aren't so hot...

I'm enjoying my first bottle of Mellow Corn BiB. At 100 proof it stands up to some ice in the glass, and it's got just enough flavor and oily mouthfeel to help beat the heat (such as it is). Hmm . . . I need to try this with ginger beer and a bit of lemon.
