Koji,I still have that bottle of Blanton's that you gave me to take to the Gazebo for everyone enjoy. It's going to make it there one day. It's just that I got really, really drunk at Marvin's Jail and couldn't walk the four blocks to the Gazebo. So arrest me! Doing time in that jail is fun! wink.giftongue.gifgrin.gif Linn

Well, it looks like Kentucky Spirit gets the win. And I thought the 80 proof would be the favorite grin.gif For those of you who chose something else, I must assume that you just have not had the pleasure of sampling this fine specimen. Either that or you're just crazy crazy.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Jeff,

Does your assessment include experience with the 12 year old?

Yours truly,

Dave,

Yes, I do have a bottle of the 12yo that I have gotten about half way through. I will say that I think the 12yo is slightly more complex and full-bodied than the KS, and I like it a lot. KS gets the edge from me because of the ready availability and the $12 price difference.

Well then, I am crazy! I have bottles of 101, Russell's Reserve, Rare Breed, and Kentucky Spirit. I like them all, a lot. But, I still like Rare Breed, the most.

I like the 12 the best . However if there was an outfit who could make it fine with their baseline product here it is. Plain old WT101. I don't know what they were thinking with the 80 proof. To me the association of Wild Turkey and 101 proof is greater than those other guys product and the wax machine. I guess they have a marketing guru to thank for that one. " Let's water it down for the people who can't break out their own ice cubes" , " Maybe we'll attract younger, unsophisticated drinkers who don't especially like the high proof".

Ok, time to confess. WT doesn't thrill me. It is good bourbon, but, folks, it just doesn't make me go gaga like it does you all. shocked.gif

There I said it. blush.gif

I've been hiding this since July when I began hanging out here. I got it off my chest. crazy.gif

On my taste buds, WT just has a harsh taste. I think someone described it as peppery. That sounds ok, but doesn't quite capture the bitter sensation I get. Now, I normally drink WT 101 when I am out on the town (most places have nothing better). It does me fine on the rocks, but I long for something, well, smoother. (No, not Makers Mark. That is too shallow a taste for me.) Now, I am not a lightweight, so smoother doesn't mean weak. Heck, I love GTS straight up. As you have heard me say many times before, it is pure nectar of the gods.

I've had KS. But, it's been so long since I've had it (4 years?), I don't really remember what it tasted like. (I did save the bottle because my wife liked the bottle. Turned out it has the metal stopper. grin.gif Bottled on 12-9-98, barrel 3, warehouse E, rick #1.)

I really like Rare Breed. Which makes sense to me because it seems that the bird lovers like RB the least of the WT expressions. It has a much more silky texture on my tongue without the normal WT harshness.

Tonight I tasted the 12 yo (after trading GTS for it). Based on memory, it has some of the smoothness of RB, but still that peppery bite of WT 101. I did like it, really, but it just doesn't make my toes tingle like ORVW (wheat or rye) or GTS.

Just to test myself and make sure I was not being unduly harsh on WT, I poured some GTS for comparison. AAAHHHHHH. Heaven.

I'm sorry folks. BT has the best mash bill(s) for me. WT is good, but it just doesn't hit the spot. shocked.gif

Will you still let me hang out here? tongue.gif

clogsdon- I understand what you are talking about-that's what makes WT stand alone. As for Kentucky Spirit, I have had a few bottles that was better than any bourbon that I have ever tasted and had some that was not good at all. My all time WT favorite is Russells Reserve. It seems to me they have taken everything that I really like about WT and put it in this one.

Cheers,

Marvin

Bobby, I just have never had an opportunity to try the 12-yr WT. But, I can imagine that it is very good. wink.gif

I had a bottle of the 12YO WT and looked at it for a year or so. I found another so after I backed it up I pulled the plug on it. It is superb, the character of WT is there and all the rough spots are smoothed over. I'm surprized to read here about the wide divergence of the KS, you expect a little but still this is supposed to be the highest expression of the distillers art. I have only one of KS and it has the Pewter stopper. I don't plan to open it . Before Christmas there still were a number of these around and one could no doubt find some but there are less now.

CL,

I'd urge you to give KS another try. It definitely isn't a light weight, but as with GTS, I think it is very smooth, with lots of good flavor. I also think very highly of RB, but KS is my #1 from Wild Turkey.
