In Boston for the week...

In Boston for the week for a show. The bourbon selection is disappointing compared to what I can get in the south. Did have my first pour of 1792 at a Rock Bottom next to our hotel the other night. Very delightful. Last night we hit the Black Rose pub which happened to have a bottle of Elijah 18 on the tippy top shelf. When I asked for a pour the bartender didn't even know what I was talking about.

Not being able to enjoy my hobby makes me miss home that much more.

Welcome to town. You are no longer in bourbon country! MA does get a very good selection in the stores, but I'm sure we are lagging in good bourbon bars. But then I prefer my own bumker so I am out of touch in that area. The Omni Parker House bar has a good selection and a very good spirit manager. Boston is a good place to find Scotch, if you are in to that.

Federal Wine and Spirits on State St. is having an Irish Whiskey tasting Tues. at 5:00 and 6:00 if you are interested. (I will be there)

They are pouring: Tyrconnel Single Malt, Tyrconnel 10 Y.O. Madeira Finish, Kilbeggan Blended, Kilbeggan 15 Y.O., Connermara Peated, Connermara Cask Strength, Greenore 8 Y.O. Grain Whiskey

They're kind of a staple here and I figure it's something I have to do when visiting Boston. I'm right up the street from the Omni so I might stop by there on my walk home this afternoon from the convention center and have something.

I hit the Piano bar in the bottom of the Marriott on Tremont with some work folks last night after dinner. They didn't have much. I had a pour of Old Grandad and Wild Turkey 101 before moving on to a Woodford (probably the best thing they had). I was drinking it neat and the bartender was pouring probably half a rocks glass full each pour. The people I was with were saying, "Seriously, that's what your drinking and that's how you're going to drink it!" They even went as far to call me hardcore. I told them calling me "hardcore" was a bit much but "I do enjoy my bourbon!"

A Sox game would be a great time, should be good weather tomorrow.

Most bars here have BOTH kinds of whiskey, JD and Jim Beam.

The lounge in the Omni is a nice upscale bar, and they do have a good whiskey selection. The last time there I had the Old Potrero 19th Century style, which is hard to find and not even available in this state.

I'm not extremely familiar with Whisky's. I mostly just stick to the Kentucky bourbons. I think I might walk up to the Omni and check it out tonight and hit the tasting around 5 tomorrow.

There's a whole world of different whisk(e)y's out there waiting to be explored. From checking out your recent posts it looks like you are doing quite well with learning all about Bourbon Whiskey. If you hit the tasting tomorrow you'll sample a variety of Irish Whiskey. And Boston is a fine place to try some Scotch Whisky. They are all different, but they are all whiskey.

Meeting and coming to terms with them all is very important to a proper education :grin:

For the best bourbon, go to Eastern Standard in Kenmore Square (Commonwealth Ave, "Kenmore" on the Green Line). They have all of the best. I'd give examples from the list but I wouldn't want to ruin it. Their bar manager (Jackson) is a huge American whiskey fan and has several of his own bourbon and rye barrels in the basement. This bar is very close to Fenway Park. If you go before the game get there early as it can get busy.

If you can deal with a 20 minute "T" ride, American Craft in Brookline has the biggest bourbon selection (25-30 brands) with a wider range of prices.

Seriously, go to Eastern Standard.

Second the Eastern Standard recommendation (third if you're into ryes!) either before, after or during the game. Jackson is a legend.

It took me a second to remember that the Omni is the Parker House -- as Mike said, the Last Hurrah bar there has the second- or third- best hotel bar selection in town. The bar at The Palm may still have a few pours of gold-foil Hirsch.

Sadly I didn't leave the show on Tuesday until 7 or so. Needless to say I missed the tasting at Federal and didn't even end up making it to the game. I did ride the T out to Harvard and my friend who lives up there took me to a little bar that had some pretty good stuff. 12yr Rip, 23 yr Pappy, Hirsch and a couple of other good pours (most notable was they had the Black Maple Hills 23 yr and regular). I wasn't there long enough to try anything because she had to go and I had to ride the T back to catch dinner with some co-workers. I wasn't too bummer because I had my American Spirits waiting for me in the room when I got back.

Cool city, but I miss the selection in the south and happy to be on my way home. Now only if Delta had something for me during this 2 hour flight. Sign.
