I'll keep the diatribe short, but the quest for the best bourbon is a fool's errand. Taste is subjective so you will certainly find favorites but this idea that there is some 'best' out there is an illusion.

Recently I have tasted two that I think rank up there as the best ever made.

Old Fitz 101, from the late 1970's, it has been referred to as part of the original Bourbon Heritage Collection.

Wild Turkey 101, from the Turkey Lore decanter series of the '70's also.

Both from Tony AKA ACDetroit.

I will steer this in a different direction. Late 80's jim beam rye. It was the first rye I ever drank, the Alabama abc store had a lot of old stock of this. It had a flavor that I have been unable to find in another rye. I have not been able to reproduce it either.

Kentucky Tavern. Hahaha, gross. I'm a youngin so it's hard to say. Pappy 15yr is pretty awesome though. My budget has prevented me from trying as many as I would like. Hope to try George T Stagg this fall. Couldn't afford it last year.

we don't all share the same tastes and opinions, it is the journey to find the best and greatest where the true joy is.

I don't want the easy answers, if it was that simple you could just bottle it away and be done... Nothing is better than the pursuit... of perfection.

Such things in life shouldn't be so easy..

In other words, asking someone to tell you what the best bourbon is, that's a fool's errand.

Yeah I agree with some others. I think a "What is YOUR favorite bourbon (or whiskey)?" is doable, but there just isn't any good way to answer that question. There's also a log of "Best" or "SUPER" bourbons out there to pick from.

Smokeless Joe's Evan Williams in a glass decanter from the early 80's was close, 7 years old, 90 proof. So was a Beam's Choice of the same era I once had at Doug Philip's. Come to think of it, that was also 90 proof and 7 years old to my best recollection.
