New Forum Topic Suggestion

Would anyone besides me be interested in a new forum topic where members could list good bourbon bars and liquor stores by city or area. I would like to use this when I travel. For instance, in Columbia, SC the best liquor store for Bourbon is Frugal MacDougal's. The buyer, Steve, is from Kentucky and loves bourbon and as a result has over 50 bourbons available compared to about 20 or less for most local stores. I could also list runner ups. The only decent bourbon bar is a private club. I travel a good bit and would find this useful. What do you think?

I think it is an excellent suggestion. The good deal thread is more of an temporary low prizes on liquor stores thread. Then there is a lot of spread out questions about this on the forum that is hard as hell to find afterwards if you want advice when you travel. A thread were all of this is assembled would be dammed good as I see it.

I too think that would be an excellent idea. Since there is a section for "good deals," I think the gist of the new forum could focus more on the bars and stores that offer good service and selection. There is a liquor store I go to in Baltimore that kills everyone else I know in selection and service. I was there yesterday and a man asked for Van Winkle Rye and they had bottles of not only the rye, but all the other Van Winkle products! I bought a case of Old Heaven Hill BIB from them and they gave me a nice case discount on it! Here in PA, while we have the God awful "state store" system, some stores do offer significantly better service and selection than others. The York premium store kills the Lancaster store on whisk(e)y selection hands-down. If we could have a forum to post up tidbits like this, maybe even by region or state, I'd be all for it!

No, I disagree. Call me selfish, I'll say I'm a protectionist for those of us here (or just me) who truly love, done some work and are willing to participate with one another here on the greatest spirit made. This forum is always widely viewed by outsiders in a ratio often over 3 to 1 and we already feed the frenzy enough. Good store selection equals allocated/anniversary/limited release stuff which in my short time here has now increased to flying off shelves at warp speed. Two store owners told me yesterday that their allocated 15 VWs and BTACs lasted a week this year versus 6 months last year. Of course there are outsiders who are true enthusiasts but I suspect by what is happening that enough are just into conspicuous consumption or even worse, ebay profiteering. I know it may be hypocritical or elitist to take this position but I and numerous others here have and are always willing to help one another through the private message system.

I agree with Josh about listing stores.

But since I travel a fair amount, I'd love a listing of bars & restaurants that serve a broad selection. This would also be helpful to newbs in that area who want to "try before they buy."

Enoch, your heart is in the right place. Your proposal is what SB.Com is all about. That is, our community, helping others in our community, to share in the great stuff. But, I have to agree with Thad, Josh, and John. Since our community is an open one, there are those who only lurk here to take advantage of our information that we share, and they unfortunately give nothing back. And, unfortunately, the people who you would want to gain from your info...rarely get the opportunity, because the lurkers and poachers out there beat them to the punch. The PM really is the best method, IMO. If you're ever coming through the ATL, and are looking for something in particular...shoot me a PM, and I'll do my best to lead you in the right direction. This offer is nothing more than what hundreds of other folks in our membership have done, and will do, here on SB. Com.

I do like your idea of the bar recommendations, though. That's a great idea for a New Forum Topic.

I guess my point was not to post the best dusty places but since carrying Bourbon on a plane is not pratical, what are the liquor stores in a city that have a good selection and reasonable prices. The one I mentioned in Columbia does not have any dusties because of their turn over and the reduce rapidly anything that doesn't sell (I got two cases of Four Roses Yellow for $5 a bottle and two cases of Charter 101 1.75 for $10 a bottle) but they have the best selection in Columbia including several brands that I haven't seen anywhere else in SC.

Enoch when staying over night in a new city/town I consult the phone book and call the stores that look promising. Even if the bourbon selection is small you may get a recommendation to another store. I don't mention dustys until I arrive to view the merchandise. Not a fool proof method by any means but it is a start.
