bvscfanatic
Anybody up for a little game? Imagine that you have been ordered to lock in the names of just FIVE BOURBONS. These five bourbons will be the ONLY bourbons which you may purchase for the rest of your life. Which bourbons would these be? For myself, the goal has always been to find value. I'm not a top shelf drinker, nor am I sophisticated in describing bourbon. I'm looking for affordable great taste, and I like high proof. I normally drink neat. Color is very important to me. Dark amber approaching ruby is what I look for. Experience has proven that the darker the hue, the more likely I'm going to approve. The possibility of buying in magnum (1.75L) bottles is nice, but I included one exception in my list. Here are my choices: Elijah Craig 12 year (94 proof)Weller Antique (107 proof)Fighting Cock (103 proof) Very Old Barton (6 year, BIB, 100 proof)Old Grand Dad (114 proof) I could be happy forever with these. White Dog
I'll bite. I like your choices. I would want to cover styles and ages, but it's sad to think of only 5 for the rest of my life. I'll only use current releases.OGD114 for Rye heavy.GTS for some extra age.Weller Antique for wheat.FRSB just because. And VWFRR, because if I can't have a Rye, life ain't worth livin'. bvscfanatic
Wow, you all have really made me glad that I began this thread. I never would have imagined such a terrific response, and the patterns are very interesting indeed. I've not had the Pappy 15, but I know and love the ORVW 10 (sipping it as we speak), so I can understand why it appears so frequently here. Keep 'em comin' PLEASE. I'm really enjoying reading all these lists.
Parkersback
The way I first understood your question, it was what bourbons would we want to be able to purchase for the rest of our lives, so I thought PVW15 would be off-limits since we know that it is finite (it could be that OGD114 gets discontinued, but we don't know for sure if it will). But I'll give my answers under the conditions that most here have understood them, positing that each of the five would be perpetually available. In no order:Woodford ReservePVW15OGD BIBElmer T LeeFR Small BatchOGD and ETL because of the intersection of great price and great taste, PVW15 for when I am (or am feeling) flush, and FRSB because my wife loves it, too. And WR because it's great bourbon.I have a George T Stagg in the cabinet but have not yet tasted it, I wonder if it'll change my list once I pop it open.
