Need Traveling to Kentucky Advice

My wife and I are going to be visiting some friends in Frankfort for a couple of days after Christmas. (She worked there in 2009.) Need advise on liquor stores with the best inventory and selection in the Lexington, Frankfort, Louisville area. Not for dusty hunting but want to pick up some stuff that I can't get in SC. Thanks,

Pretty easy. Thoroughbred in Lexington and Liquor Barn in L'ville are good starting points. Large stores with good beer and wine selections too.

The first time I set foot in a Binny's, I felt like Randall in the movie Clerks when he went to Big Choice Video. Another customer in the store at the same time exclaimed "this place is like Disneyland for drunks."

For lifetime control staters like us, retail sales in other states are a real eye opener to what we are missing out on.

There are also Liquor Barns in Lexington if you need to limit yourself to one trip. Many drug stores in Lexington and Louisville also sell Bourbon.

In SC you can sell beer and wine together and you can sell wine and liquor together but not beer and liquor.

There are all kinds of drive through liquor stores here in Louisville. None of these places have one but if you're here I suggest stopping by Evergreen Liquors, Liquor Barn, Party Mart, Beverage Warehouse or Westport Whiskey and Wine.

Also, if you come down through ohio not far off I-71 just at the KY-Ohio border there is Cork-n-Bottle and The Party Source.

You can still buy a bottle of soda, a half pint and a cup with ice at the drive-up window.

Now that doesn't mean you can have an open container, but it seems to foster that thinking.

When they threatened to change the laws about drive up at liquor stores, a guy on TV was quoted as saying something like, "Next thing you know, you won't be able to take your buddies in the back of your pickup", not knowing that most of the country already frowns on that.

The last time I was in Alabama you could also get a bottle of anything and they would throw in a cup, ice and soda or water. And for that matter most of the places you can get fish bait, your nails done, and your hair. Wow! Talk about one stop.

In Australia, every liquor retailer sells beer, wine and spirits under one roof... unless they're a specialty store (which is rare)

And most towns and suburbs have at least one local tavern that has a retail store and drive thru attached.

The Red Dot in Frankfort has a pretty good selection, though not as good as the others. (It is the first place I ever found Weller 12yo--and one of their locations has several bottles as of a couple days ago.) There are several LB locations in Lexington too. I'd second the Thoroughbred recommendation for Lexington also, though their selection has been a little spottier lately. All of these places, unfortunately, seem to have slightly different selections, so you might have to hit up several spots. What exactly will you be looking for? I'm actually in Lexington and travel to Frankfort frequently and, as a result, have a pretty good knowledge of what's in those spots.

Kentucky has literal drive-through liquor stores, not just drive-up windows. You actually drive into the store. Ohio has them too, but just for beer and wine.

Sadly, Louisville bars no longer have drive-up windows like they did in the '60s.

Locally we have a well stocked liquor store selling beer wine liquor and a large door into their bar that has all their stock available for sampling.

Louisiana or Mississippi - i forget which - has drive thru martini bars and drive up martini windows. Not sure why they are so fixated on the martini thing.

Yeah. In SC package stores, beer and liquor are in the same building, but there are two different front doors. One door going to wine and beer. One door going to liquor. So, you go into door #1 to buy your beer. Then, you exit the building, and re-enter the liquor side of the building through door #2, to buy your liquor. No cutting across!

Hey, at least, when your wife asks where you're going, you can say with a somewhat clean conscience, that you're going to get your exercise.

There are walk-up bars in New Orleans, at least there were, at least during Carnival.

And I remember a nice swim-up bar in Jamaica.

There are a ton of drive-thur liquor(sell everything including ice cold Colt 45's for the road) stores in Kentucky. I guess since I've seen them all my life it doesn't seem like a big deal.

The Liquor Barns in Lexington are good. I think they have like 5 of them now, check their website. Two of them are rather large, one is decent size, and the other two are smaller stores they bought not too long ago but still have a really good selection. Red Dot on the west side of Frankfort has a nice bourbon selection.

The wife and I should be in Frankfort around the same time; I am going to try and set up a Hardhat tour with Fred as our guide, looking like the 29th or 30th (if the creeks don't rise and it's raining here now mucking up flight scheduals)

Since you're coming up from South Carolina, it would seem to me that the Liquor Barn in Lexington would be more convenient than a trip to Louisville. Their Lexington store on Man-O-War (just off I-75, exit #108) is my personal favorite. It's a pretty big place, and hard to miss.

I know of four stores that they have here in Lexington now. Hamburg (as the Man-O-War & I-75 area is known) is the largest. The Richmond Road store is only a couple of miles from it. Richmond Rd is only about two miles from me, but I go the extra two miles to shop the Hamburg store usually.

The five Liqour Barn stores in Lexington are located at the following:

Man O War at Hamburg just off I-75(newest and big)

Harrodsburg Road just off New Circle(big store)

Richmond Road between New Circle and Man O War(Medium)

The old Shoppers Village Liquor on New Circle and Broadway on the Northside(Smaller store)

The old Shoppers Village Liquor at the by the intersection of Euclid and Tates Creek Road(Very close to UK's campus)(Smaller store)

The Hamburg store is the quickest store to access for those on I-75. The Harrodsburg Road store is the closest Liquor Barn in Lex for those coming from almost all distilleries.
