For the first time in my recall my local has Beam Black label priced slightly higher than Jack Daniels black. Not much, .20 cents or so, but it's the first time I've seen that.

Is the Beam so popular that it can out price Daniels? I'll ask the manager about comparative sales next time I'm there.

Jack Daniels is heavily advertised on tv in our area but I haven't seen a Beam ad except in print.

They're priced about the same in these parts, but those 2 products don't really compete against each other.

Beam White and Jack Black battle it out for what going to be mixed into cola. Jack gets away with being higher than JB White simply due to popularity.

Yes, well I was speaking specifically about Jim Beam Black which has been priced lower than Jack Daniels black in this area although I suspect both are used primarily as mixers with cola flavored beverages.

for comparison -current prices at Specs in Houston, all 1.75l (plus 8.25% tax):

A few of these are on current specials that end at end of year.

I know you were speaking about JB Black. My point was that, even thought JB Black and Jack Black are close in price, they are not direct competitors. JB White and Jack duke it out for the top American Whiskey, in terms of sales, with Jack standing on top, which is why it can fetch the higher price.

Jim Beam Black, at double the age of Jack, and at a higher proof, is in a different category, despite being close in price.

What do you see as a "high-end" well or rail? JB White and Jack. Jim Beam Black is more of a "back-bar" item.

Here the black labels, JD, JB, EW with Dickel falling in there somewhere, are viewed as direct competitors but that may be local mindset as much as anything.

At the end of the day, Jack Black is the top seller in the U.S., followed by JB White. JB Black isn't even close.

Of course, but my post wasn't about sales position, rather the oddity of Jim being priced higher than Jack.

White Dog

Jack Daniels is the biggest selling American whiskey in the world and Jim Beam White is the largest selling bourbon in the world but the gap between the two are huge. JD way out sells JBW world wide they are not "battling it out".

Paul, my post was not intended to compare national sales figures or about any sort of battle. I merely mentioned that locally Jim beam black label is currently being priced higher than Jack Daniels black label which is a break from past practices. That may just be local as no one has posted a similar pricing difference elsewhere. That is apparently not the case at Specs in Houston according to one of our Members there.

Beam black is about 3.00 more per 750 in Ohio than Jack black with Beam white a buck less than Jack.

I suspect that their fans are fiercely brand loyal, so pricing variations don't make a difference one way or the other. Just another odd comparison, IMO.

I understand but there is the occasional thread drift. I would buy JBB over JDB any day.

The two are priced identically by the OLCC, at $22.95. About one month in three the JB Black is on sale for $18.95. About one month in four the JD Black is on sale for $20.95.
