More? Compare those prices to the Michigan State minimum prices here:

Let me go back and change that to "Most things cost more here in the Beaver State compared to most of the country except for the Wolverine State and <insert your control state here>"

Done.

Now you're misquoting me!

I feel like the Grinch..."I've puzzled and puzzled, till my puzzler was sore."

These type of questions are torture to me. I just can't make a decision. There are just too many choices that I could go with, particularly in the <$20 and $21-$30 range.

So,

"Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! Maybe choosing the "best bourbon", he thought, doesn't have to be a chore. Maybe choosing the best...perhaps...means a little bit more. And what happened then, well in SBville they say, the Grinch's Visa bill grew 3 sizes that day. And then--the true meaning of "best bourbon" came through, and the Grinch's bunker found the quantity of 10 bunkers...plus 2!"

"He brought everything back, all the bottles for the feast. And he, he himself, could love no bourbon the least."

My purchases are pretty much under $30, with the occasional higher-end bottle for special occasions. I rarely buy anything in the $32-$60 range.

Under $20 - Weller SR, OWA, EW

$21-$30 - EC12, EWSB

$30-$45 - Weller 12, ORVW 10

$45-$60 - Lot B

$60-$80 - WLW, GTS, Pappy 15, PHC 2010

Over $80 - Haven't bought anything at this price point

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm still fairly new to this - only 20 or so open bottles, but I own (or have tried) many of the bourbons under $60 in each category.

<$20 VOB BiB ($12), OWA ($15.50)

$21-30 Bulleit ($22)

$31-50 ORVW 10/107 ($32)

$51-60 PVW 15 yr ($54)

$61-80 GTS ($70)

$80+ looking for PVW 20; 23 is too rich for my blood

Good choices Roger. after years of buying the newest thing I've cycled back to the basics which for me is Forester, Grand Dad, Evan Williams, Weller and Barton. At our local I can buy six of these for the price of one Parker Heritage or Pappy 15.

Are the high tone whiskys better? Well, yes and no, they have more finesse, aged roundness, subtlety, greater depth of flavor, worth sharing with friends who appreciate them but darn sure not six times better.

Old Forrester Signature is $18 a bottle here and it's a giveaway at that price.

OGD 114 is way too cheap at $21, and OWA is still good for $20, though I'm still pissed at the shift in profile over the past five years. Guess they are happy with selling thier wares and don't mind producing a diminished product.

40 Creek has made a good b-day present for many of my friends, and they really seem to like it.

<$20: Old Forester Signature, BT, EC12 (although I think the price may have gone up since I last bought it), any rye in the price range (I really like rye, yes even Beam).

$21-30: OGD 114, WT101, EWSB (any vintage), McKenna SB BiB

$31-40: WTRB

I don't generally pay more than $30 for bourbon, I'm quite happy with the stuff in the lower price range. I spend that money on Scotch... maybe that is for a different thread.

In the under $20 category I would definitely add Old Ezra and AAA 10 Star.

I've never seen EC 12 under $20 in Dallas. OGD 114 is around $22.

Possible thread drift here, slap me back if need be:

I searched around and could not find an exact answer to this general question (or set of questions):

1. What is the relationship between Old Forester Signature and Old Forester 100 proof? I feel like I've seen bottles on the shelf that say, "Signature" (which is 100pf) but others that simply say, "100 Proof" Or am I mistaken?

2. Is it still "bonded"?

I believe that the Signature replaced the "100 proof", and I don't think the Signature has the word "bonded" on the label.

I've never tried either. Some people say the old one is better, and I know of at least one who likes the Signature better. If you have access to BiB bottles, you could buy one of each and compare.

Scott is correct that OF Signature is 100 proof but does not say bonded on the label. Therefore I do not believe that it is bonded. It's one of my favorite "budget" bourbons and flies well around here with my friends, but there are plenty of folks here who do not care for it. I'm still seeing OF 100 proof on the shelves quite regularly, so I can't tell you whether or not it's been discontinued in favor of the Signature. Wish I could be of more help.

The only ones shown on the web site are the 86, the Sig and the BB.

Thanks for the info, Scott. As a fan of OF Signature I guess I owe it to myself to buy some OF 100 now to do a side-by-side comparison while I still can. See how I can always rationalize another whiskey purchase?

<20: (no bourbons, but 40creek or OO)

20-40: ETL-SB, EW SB

40-60: OFBB

60-80: WLW, PVW 15

Lawsuit winnings: any PHC

I can't believe that it took that long for OFBB to show up, it is $40 here in GA, with the occasional $35 sale price. Between that and WTRB being $35 I rarely venture above the $40 price bracket, except for GTS of course.

We also have the benefit of 1792 being $19, RBIB being $16(when you can get it), EWSB @$21, and EC@$22. Add to that 1.75's of VOB 90 are $17, OC101 - $21; then on sale Bulleit - $35, WT101 - $32, GD12 - $35; and there is an awful lot of really good stuff that falls into the <$20 category.

The problem with OFBB is its variability. The 2007 was fabulous. If someone offered me a choice of a bottle of that and a Hirsch 16 BW, I'd have to flip a coin.

The 2008, on the other hand, was reported by a number of tasters to have a "dirty diaper" element on the nose.

I have only had the 2009 and 2010 and loved them both. I enjoy the difference between them and am looking forward to the 2011 release.

I also loved OF Repeal and of course OFS.

Dirty diaper, eh, yea I could do without that. Was the problem with 2008 bottle-to-bottle or with the entire year's product?

Fortunately our state ran ABC runs monthly specials. You can see what's on sale for the the next 3 months on their website. I only make purchases at our ABC when things are on sale. :D

Where does it list the sale prices? I travel out to Wilmington, NC a few times a year and would love to find what will be on sale while I'm out there!

Thanks,

Jack

A store by me has Evan Williams Single Barrel 2001 for $19.99.......is this a good buy? If so, good enough to stock up? or just good enough to buy an extra bottle?

That's 10 bucks more than MI price.

If you never had it then get one, you can't go wrong at $19.99 then you can decide if you should get another bottle or case.
