Why do you consider Bourbon to be much better than beer ?

bourbon's better. WAY better. I saw bourbon and beer fight one time with ancient katanas folded a thousand times by demons enslaved in fiery armor specifically to make such weapons. Bourbon cut straight through that long neck of beer's, and beer's head went spraying off into the ink stained night.

I saw that. IIRC the part of Bourbon was played by Uma Thurman and that of Beer by Lucy Liu.

Or am I thinking of something else?

I love them both for many of the same reasons that have already been stated. Both have their place and time (as do wine, rum, gin, tequila, etc.) For that matter, I love craft beers and enjoy them most often, particularly the english style ales and any stout, but on a hot day on the golf course, a few Bud Lights just about hit the spot. I'm enjoying a relative expensive bourbon right now (Rock Hill Farms), but I also find Evan Williams black label to be fantastic on a cold day on the golf course. My bottom line is that I pretty much enjoy a lot of different alcohols/flavors and it just depends on my mood or setting. That is why I never poo poo anyone else's choice in any alcoholic beverage. Variety is the spice of life after all.

Bourbon and Beer have a permanent place in my heart. Both of are equal importance to me. That being said I don't collect beer like I do bourbon. Partially because of the fact that it can go bad and because of the fact that i'm just not interested in collection beer bottles etc.

I do own a growler and I do get it filled quite often. The mother in law got me a BeerTender for Christmas, which is a miniKeg dispenser. Identical to a Kegeratore but counter size. The only issue is the Beer Tender is a joint venture between Heiniken and TFal, which means it only works with minikegs that carry the DraughtKeg design and function. Up until yesterday I thought that was only Heiniken and Heiniken Light. But, to my surprise it just happens that my favorite beer NEWCASTLE jumped on board and now offers a DraughtKeg minikeg.

Needless to say when I can find one of these locally my nightly bourbon consumption decreases considerably. Whereas before the BeerTender I would have a couple of pours (2-4) a night, now it's only one. I've found that this just happens to work out in my financial favor as I'm consuming my pricey bourbon as quickly, which means I don't have to replace it as often.

All in all, I think if I had to choose it would be bourbon.

Bourbon is sincere. Beer and Vodka I can have a few and not feel'em and then they sneak up on you all at once. I know when I'm drinking bourbon from the first sip with it's initial burn all the way down to my belly and I immediatly feel the relaxing effects. It helps keep me in check, most of the time, unless I'm at the Houston bourbon get together. Then I have zero control over my pouring hand and abilitiy to not swallow what is in my glass.

For me beer is a taste I can't stand. I'm yet to try a beer that doesn't activate my gag reflex and make me want to spit (or vomit) it back out.

I felt the same way until recently, though in reality I can't say I sampled enough beer to come to that conclusion in an unbiased open minded way. I tried beer when I was younger; mid teens and then again when I was of age. Bud light, Coors light that sort of thing. I think about five or six years ago I tried a Killians Irish Red and couldn't finish it.

Part of the problem is I have always thought of beer as a cheep way to get loaded. It sounds silly but I never realy gave the craft of brewing any thought, until recently.

Here's what hapened. Bear with me this is a window into my thought process.:

I was looking for a convenient way to drain the skim milk from the cream sitting on top of it. First, I looked for one of those gallon jugs people use to make sun tea, the kind with a spigot at the bottom. I couldn't find one but I remembered my brother-in-law has one of those Mr. beer kits. Well, he doesn't have it anymore. So I started looking on-line which led me to peruse a couple home brew forums out of boredom. The more I learned the curiouser I got. I could now put a name to those aspects of beer that turned me off, and consequently had an educated idea of what I thought I might like.

A few weeks later I found myself in town at lunch time and quite hungry. Instead of ignoring my stomach till I got home, or going somewhere familiar, I stopped at a brewpub and instead of ordering iced tea with my burger I said, "I'd like to try your bock". The waitress offered to bring me a small sample but I figured I should give it a propper go and ordered a pint. To date, I have been back to the same place three times, always ordering their bock and drinking it with a meal. That last part is important. I really believe that consuming it in this way has helped acclimate me to the taste. The last time I ate there, the first several sips of beer led me to exclaim to myself, damn this really is good.

Not long ago I would have said bourbon is by far better than beer. In fact I would have considered beer an unfinished product totally efed up with the addition of hops. Why make beer when you can leave the hops out and distill it and age it in oak barrels? I don't think that way anymore.

It's kinda strange with me, almost like having a wife and a mistress.......

I drink bourbon at home, rarely do I have a beer at home.

I drink beer at bars; usually accompanied by loud music and dancing girls.

Well that's interesting Brad.

Beer does often go well with food, although food can get in the way of it too, sometimes.

Beer. Made mainly from malted barley. A sweetish, cereal-based drink, not all that different from the malt in a shake. Except bitter, sometimes flowery hops are added to balance and off-set that sweetness. Yeast type can add fruity flavours too, just as in a bourbon mash. Originally the hops were added as a preservative but then people got used to the taste. A lot of people are turned off beer because the commercial norm of it often is so lousy. But a bock is an all-malt, fairly low-hopped drink, a good introduction. Prosit.

I do not consider bourbon better than beer. I like both (actually, I like ales far more than beer) and I like rum, and I find that I tend to like all three of them better when they're about as dark as they can be. There are times when only a beer will satisfy my desire at that moment. Sometimes rum or an even sweeter liqueur might call to me momentarily.

BUT what I WILL state very emphatically is that bourbon is MY very favorite whiskey, and really the only one I care to purchase or drink. My reasoning here is the many factors that make bourbon so varied and so interesting and so adaptable to any taste. The mere range of proofs alone makes bourbon the most fascinating whiskey available, at least where I live. The variety of recipes, the variety in aging, and the agreed to standards of production take the whole matter further. I've never seen another whiskey that tempted me to switch. Just my personal opinion. And that's pretty much any of us can offer.

You're absolutely right. I can't believe I wrote that. Thanks for catching it. What I meant to say was that I like ales more than lagers. Not sure what I was drinking when I wrote that.

Add some Bourbon, let's say Ezra B 12 yr to... oh say Rogue Double Bastard Ale and, Damn, the football game just got a lot more interesting. Tastes damn fine too.

I love beer!!

I'm fortunate to have some amazing bars that specialize in having 100+ flavors available and the selection in a few package stores is just amazing. 20 years ago, I brewed my own. I have found that there are so many choices that I can just keep trying new ones while rotating through my old favorites. I still can't believe there are people like my brother in law who won't drink a bud light, "horse piss", but buys Coors light by the 30 pack...WTF???

I've always liked whiskey but never appreciated it. Recently, I've become aware of the variety available that I enjoy with beer and look forward to trying them all. :grin Like others mentioned it is nice to have many bottles open and rotate through them. Also, I'm finding that after a few beers I feel full and I don't care for that bloated gassy feeling anymore. I tend to start with a beer first then pour a bourbon to sip and enjoy. Glad to have found this forum!
