Four Roses Single Barrel Cigar Selection Recipe...113.6 proof, barrel strength Bourbon with a mash & yeast recipe selected especially to pair with cigars.

Any thoughts on this? A cigar store near me has it for sale

Four Roses has two different mash bills (low rye and high rye, although both are more rye than most bourbons on the market I believe), and five different yeast strains. Check out this thread courtesy of Oscar.

I assume your retailer did a single barrel selection of one of the ten possible recipes. They are usually about $50-$55 and I haven't tried one I don't like yet, although others may disagree.

It's all fairly academic to this non-smoker, but I'm curious; what qualities make for an especially good pairing with cigars?

I see these people found an OBSV, but that may be one particular barrel talking not the recipe.

I find you have to be careful pairing any bourbon and cigar as they both have a tendency to overwhelm the palate. OBSV is a OK choice given this is the 4R SB shelf expression and 100 proof. Cask strength(115+), IMO, just plays havoc with cigars and the palate.

My pick to match with a cigar is typically not bourbon but when it is I will do something in the 80-95 proof range. Baby Saz works well with spicy cigars (Partagas, Boli, RA, etc), Lot B with lighter more floral cigars (ERdM, LGC, HdM, etc).

Oddly enough, I checked out that link and in 2 weeks I'll be staying about a block away from that particular Cigar Bar in Orlando. Thought that was pretty random...

I wonder if the whole "cigar pairing" is just a cheap ploy, or if they actually smoked while tasting the barrels until they found a good match with a particular cigar or something like that.

There are quite a few spirits...rum, bourbon, cognac, etc. that claim to be selected to go with cigars... IMO it is a great marketing play but at the end of the day go no better with cigars than many other spirits you could choose. There is a tendency to charge more for " cigar friendly" spirits. The best formula I find is to drink a beverage you like with a cigar you like.... you do the match up. For my palate I like sweet beverages (rum, rye's, oatmeal stouts, etc.).

Most of the time I like water with my cigars, but if I'm around the house there is always bourbon in my hand, so I end up drinking that too.

I am with you on this one. I love a good aged rum (El Dorado 15 comes to mind) with a nice cigar.

Mostly marketing I believe as they are promoted as having some perceived 'extra' whereas they just cost more.

I know of a few drams that go well with cigars but are not as good by themselves. The Dalmore Cigar Malt comes to mind along with the Ferrand Cigar Cognac of 5+ years ago. Currently I have a Blair Athol Cigar Malt that seems to be better with a cigar then by itself.

It's like the hype surrounding food/beverage match ups. What it amounts to is that there are some general guidelines that make sense, mostly in terms of finding pairings that are pretty evenly matched, so one doesn't overwhelm the other. Then, for marketing reasons, people take it to an extreme saying some particular pairing is "the best." This is why I believe people who are always looking for "the best" and looking for an "expert" to tell them what "the best" is are practically begging to be conned.
