My wife and I have to be in Ft. Worth, TX next week (during Valentines and our anniversary) Any bar, restaurant and good liquor store recommendations. Also interested in Dallas as we may venture over there.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Joe T Garcia's is one of DFW's most iconic restaurants. It is in the Stockyards (just a few miles outside of Fort Worth). I haven't been there in a few years, but it was always more authentic Mexican than "Tex Mex." A very good spot.

If you're looking for Tex Mex, one of my favorite places in Dallas is Mia's. I've tried a lot of different items on the menu, but I always come back to the brisket tacos - they're terrific. This is the place where Jerry Jones was spotted with Jimmy Johnson, just before Jerry fired Landry after he bought the Cowboys.

If you like Southwestern cuisine, famous chef Stephan Pyles' resturant is on Ross Avenue in Dallas. I have not been to this restaurant, self named "Stephan Pyles," but I went to his Star Canyon restaurant (now closed because he moved to his new location) and it was simply outstanding.

I see that you're in South Carolina, so you might be familiar with the Rathbun family. Kevin Rathbun has two restaurants in Atlanta - Rathbun's and Rathbun Steak. I've been to his steak restaurant and it is terrific. Kevin's brother, Kent, lives in Dallas and has several restaurants in the area. I have been to Jasper's in Plano, and it is very good (but probably a little far for you). I have also heard wonderful reviews of his restaurant, Abacus, and it has been recognized nationally - I just can't give it a personal recommendation.

I'll add the obligatory BBQ restaurant here - I personally think the BBQ is better in Austin, but there are some very good spots in DFW as well. It has been serveral years since I have been to Railhead BBQ in Fort Worth but I remember it being very good.

There are many more great restaurants in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but hopefully this will give you a start. Another famous chef, Dean Fearing (one of the founders of the Southwestern cuisine movement along with Stephan Pyles) has a restaurant in Dallas, and there are some good local chain restaurants. Mi Concina can be found around the DFW area (I think there is one in downtown Fort Worth) and it is always pretty good Tex Mex.

I lived in the north Dallas area for several years so most of my nights out were on the Dallas side of the Metroplex, and if you're looking for some fun bars I think you should check out Uptown Dallas. Just north of downtown Dallas you'll find McKinney Avenue (running north to south), and there are some pretty good spots along there and in that area. Downtown Fort Worth is a lot of fun too, but I didn't spend enough time over there to know where to recommend.

I hope this helps!

Jack
