Delta Airlines offering Woodford Reserve

While I don't often compliment the airlines, I was pretty happy to learn during a recent business trip that Delta is offering Woodford Reserve as it's bourbon.

Each bottle, which contains a little less than 2 oz will set you back $7 in coach. However, I got lucky as each of my 4 boarding passes had a free drink coupon. Here is what I brought back from the trip:

Note that there are only 3 as I brought one bottle back in my stomach.

Maker's Mark rather famously was built in part by being available on airlines. In their case, the little bitty drippy red wax seal was too cute to resist.

Yep, the WR is a welcome offering during the flight back home from a trip. But, Delta has me pissed, as they've recently dumped the Woodford and/or Maker's that they offered in the Sky Clubs, and now only offer Jack Daniel's. BOOOO!!!!!!

My wife filled a bunch of small TSA approved bottles for my last last flight. Thanks to her, I had a variety of "mouthwash" bottles to choose from.

The Delta SkyClubs vary considerably as to food and drink available by location. That said, Tillamook cheese seems to be available universally. Some clubs have great local ales on tap; others nothing but standard megabrews.

Off topic, but I do applaud the recent announcement from Delta that SkyMiles will no longer expire. Let's see if any of the other majors match that not insignificant perk.

I was there about the same time, but it was 8:30 AM, so I didn't notice. Maybe, since the airport is in Kentucky, they let them keep the bourbon? Every other SC I've been to is bourbonless.

The American Admirals Clubs started offering free drinks this year. Unfortunately, the free drinks also vary widely from club to club, as they do in the Delta clubs.

I was recently in the American Club in Miami and the well (free) whiskey was Crown Royal which I believe to be a respectable free offering. However, the free bourbon at my local club at Raleigh-Durham International was Aristocrat Bourbon. I don't know much about this bourbon other than to say that I think it is a bottom shelf product from Heaven Hill - I couldn't even find it on their web site. The NC ABC stores sell a .75 L bottle for $7.45.

Heaven Hill puts out a range of liquors, Bourbon, vodka, gin, etc. under the Aristocrat brand and all I've seen were entry level priced.

The CVG airport SkyClub does indeed have Woodford Reserve -- this past Saturday afternoon, at least -- and it is a good bourbon these days.

I was in the Delta Sky Club in Minneapolis this week, and they have opened what they call their "Premium Bar". At least, I think it's new, as I don't recall seeing it on past trips there. They still pour the free drinks with standard fare (the "American Whiskey" is Jack Daniel's ). But, you can buy premium stuff, as well. Bulleitt, Bulleitt Rye, and Woodford were other American whiskies. The Scotch selection was most impressive. Lagavulin 16, JW Blue and Gold, and a host of other single malts. I'd say, at least a dozen. I think the Lag was $16. The Bulleitt Rye was $8 for a decent pour. It was a very fruitful trip, so I didn't feel bad popping for a couple.

Good news. I think that Delta must be rolling out the Premium Bar concept out somewhat nationally. "A" Concourse Sky Club iin ATL had it. More good news, Indy airport SC had brought back Woodford to supplement JD, which has been only choice for months. Enjoying one, now, as i wait for my flight back home. BTW, IND SC gets "cutest bar attendants" award. Top notch. Another fruitful trip, so I'm heading over to the Harry & Izzie's here in the airport for that big ol pork t-loin sammy and a Blanton's!
