Just an fyi- i was watching the Jim Rutledge video on sourmashmanifesto.com and he said that this year's limited edition would be the OBSQ recipe (high rye, floral/spicy yeast).

The '09 was the OESQ, same yeast but low rye mashbill.

I wonder how the floral yeast will hold up to the high rye spiciness?

That '09 was underated, it was subtle but had a lot of flavors going on, I got Nestles chocolate powder mix and dark fruit, it was a winner.

Both years of the Mariage were very well done. I have really found it hard to find one of the FR recipes that I don't like. Can't wait to get my paws on the 2011 LE.

I agree, the 09 flew under the radar (not that I minded, since I was able to stock up later), but was really great. Can't wait for the 2011! And thanks for the info Tumpstylz!

FR will be the first booth I head to at Chicago Whisky Fest this year; just found out they will be pouring the 2011 LE during VIP hour. Maybe I will see you there Trumpstylz!

Haha, Probably not. I waited too long to get my ticket. Might go to the binny's thing the night before though.

I had the 2011 LESB this weekend poured by Al Young at the Julio's 'whiskey weekend'. It was quite excellent. It is OBSQ, 12yo, 59%.

Cheers,

Any word on what they are calling it?

Oscar, I may not have gotten the question right, but this is just going to be called the Limited Edition Single Barrel release for 2011. I am not aware that it will have a name. At least Jim Rutledge didn't mention that it would.

As for how the OBSQ stands up, great question. If their OBSQ in white whiskey form gives any idea then it should be fantastic. As an aside, I have not tasted any better white whiskey out there than the OBSK and OBSQ white dog from Four Roses. They are missing a huge opportunity by not putting this stuff out there in limited releases. Unreal stuff!

I too will be at the Chicago Whisky Fest. Hope to see you other folks there!

So far the only one that has only been known by its year is the 2009 edition.

IIRC

2010= 100th Anniversary (of the distillery itself)

2008= 120th Anniversary (of the brand)

2007= 40th Anniversary (of Jim's career there)

Maybe they're running out of anniversaries!

Yep the 2009 was just called "Limit Edition 2009 Release"

And how many more anniversaries can there be?

February 2002 Kirin bought Four Roses so they could call this year's release the "9th Anniversary of Kirin Ownership"

Somehow it just doesn't have a good ring to it but you have to admit that in 9 short years they have blown away the others with what they offer in both choices of quantity and quality.

There has to be an Al Young anniversary of some sort coming up.

Is there going to be a release tasting at the distillery this year? If so, I assume my invitation got caught by my spam filter.

I don't think it's been announced yet.

Last year it was on a Wed. I hope they move it to Thursday as it makes it easier to attend.

I'm still amazed how many people don't think to add a little water to barrel proof whiskeys if they find them too hot. I get the feeling some people think there's something wrong with adding water. I always use a little water with over-proof whiskeys. Otherwise I get nasty heartburn and I can barley taste anything.

"There's a big burn on the finish which mars the overall effect" Gee who would think you would get a lot of burn at 118 proof? If the burn bothers you, add some water. Then start a sentence like this: "With a little water, the burn is replaced by notes of..." How hard is that?

They did, indeed, have a release party, and it was on a Thursday.

It's good whiskey. I was standing in the sun, so no tasting notes. As I told Mr. Rutledge, I wasn't sure with the first sample, so I led the stampede to the bar for the second.

Mr. Rutledge said that the limited editing small batch they release in the fall is the Mariage with the name removed because, to paraphrase, it was too damned confusing. Last year's was three OxSx, not two, but it's the same concept as the Mariage. I think he said they were in the process of tasting for this year's.
