"Bourbon Women" Debuts with Spring Event

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 9, 2011) --- Bourbon Women is a new consumer organization that will focus on providing networking, educational, philanthropic and social opportunities for women with an interest and affinity for bourbon. Peggy Noe Stevens, chairman of the group, and other directors, will target an often overlooked, but extremely important group of bourbon consumers - professional women. Through a calendar of innovative events beginning with an inaugural event in April, 2011 at the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort, Ky., the organization will host seminars, tastings and distillery tours.

"Women are often overlooked as bourbon consumers, but they're an extremely important and growing audience," said Peggy Stevens of Peggy Noe Stevens & Associates, the group's founder and chairwoman. "This consumer organization will attract a dynamic group of professional women dedicated to the preservation of bourbon's unique cultural heritage," she said. "They can express and enjoy their bourbon loyalty while leveraging this powerful network."

Bill Samuels, president of Maker's Mark commented, "I love the idea of a group that formally associates women and bourbon since my mother was the driving creative force behind Maker's Mark. She designed the bottle and came up with the name, and it was her sense of style that was my father's guide to position the brand among all the other whiskeys already out there. She would have been the first to sign up for this new group."

Representatives from Kentucky's signature distilleries congratulated Stevens on the new group and offered their support. "This is an innovative and exciting idea, and we look forward to working with Bourbon Women to salute our legendary industry's rich history and proud heritage," said Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers' Association.

In addition to a slate of unique events and networking opportunities, Bourbon Women will donate financial proceeds to a scholarship for a female student through Sullivan University. Membership is $50 a year. Women over 21 years of age are eligible. Sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses interested in helping Bourbon Women produce quality events and form relationships through their company and products.

A Salute to Women, Wine and Whiskey

An all-star team of female chefs from the South and Midwest will join The Brown Hotel executive chef Laurent Géroli for the second annual “A Salute to Women, Wine and Whiskey†event on Friday, June 17. The five-course dinner is $125 per person (inclusive of tax and gratuity) and a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by Sullivan University to create a scholarship for a female student attending the school’s National Center for Hospitality Studies (NCHS). Wine expert David DuBou of Vintner Select will also be available throughout the evening to discuss the wine pairings. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres prepared by Sullivan University students, chef faculty member Katie Payne and Juleps Catering as well as Capriole Farms cheese provided by award-winning farmstead cheese maker Judy Schad.

I have talked with several people who attended the event at the Governor's Mansion and they all had very positive things to say about the night. It will be interesting to see if they can continue to pull together and make the group work.

I have seen a more women involved in bourbon in the last 20 years. When Chris Morris and I started to do the Woodford Academy 10 years ago there were very few women attending and they were all there with their husband or boyfriend. Now the Academy is attracting more women and many are attending either alone or with a group of other women. I also donate bourbon tastings to charities and I have had several in the last 5 years that were purchased by women for themselves and not for a boyfriend or husband. Women are definitely taking notice of bourbon and it is great to see this group organize. it can only be a good sign for the bourbon industry.

Are we trying to set a group apart from virtual women, cartoon women or women in torn bodice fiction?

Toss in the boys reference at the end and it really come across as condescending, IMO.
