Last night I enjoyed a small pour of Black Bottle and imitating an experiment that Ralfy Mitchell often does with Canadian or Irish whiskies, added some Albert Premium to the nearly empty Glencairn glass. Swished it around to get the left

over coating and then nosed. The smoke was much diminished but with added sweetness. A drop of water opened things up more and I found the taste to have a nice additional element. It was still Alberta Premium but the aldehyde note was a little diminished. Overall, it made for an enjoyable experiment. The

emply glass nose was terrific. I inhaled the caramel, honey notes for awhile...delicious for the nose.

I suggest trying the drop by drop addition of bolder whiskies to lighter ones for interesting "vattings" / blendings in this case.

Sounds great! Where did you get the Alberta Premium? What did you think of the AP on its own?

Every once in awhile myself or an acquaintance go to Canada and pick up such bottles. I have Crown Royal XR too. I gave a Wiser's SB to a friend who asked me to bring it back.

Alberta Premium 25 yr old is very good, but like many Canadian whiskys, it has a trace aldehyde taste element that I don't care for (I assume it is from the grain spirit - I liken it to formaldehyde). However, it is not enough to detract from the overall enjoyment. AP is 100% rye...so it must come that grain process....Gillman I am sure knows.
