Enoch
Just curious. I'll start. I generally drink around 6 oz. each night. (Generally more if my neighbor comes over.) I start with a tasting of 4 0.5 oz samples to compare and then go with one of several standards for the rest. The tastings I drink straight. The rest I always drink with one gum drop ice cube to cool it just a touch. I also drink a large glass of water with each two ounces which keeps me from having a hangover. So what are your drinking habits?
jcg9779
My pours are usually around 1 oz. I drink three or four nights a week, and I usually have two or three pours (sometimes four) on those nights. I mostly drink it neat, and very seldom do I go with the same pour twice in a row. I just try to keep rotating through my open bottles.
Brisko
I usually have about two or three 1 oz pours most nights. Occasionally, more.Smaller pours means I can change it up. But if I'm really in the mood for just one brand, I'll pour a double.
unclebunk
Having grown up a beer drinker, there was a time when it would have been inconceivable to me that I would be drinking spirits in the amounts that I now do. Of course it varies from night to night, but I typically hit the whiskey 3-5 times per week and the volume ranges from as little as two ounces when I'm alone to six ounces or more if we're doing a tasting or friends drop by to watch a sporting event. I, too, drink large quantities of water to prevent hangovers (with varying degrees of success) but I'll be honest: On some level, I sometimes think that the amounts I drink can't be good for my health, now that my tolerance has increased to the point that it has. I mean, I don't behave foolishly when consuming liquor (drink and drive, become argumentative or abusive, etc.) but I doubt very much that my liver and stomach lining appreciate the amount of booze that comes their way. I certainly know that my wife questions the long term consequences of regular whiskey consumption and my doctor would likely have a fit if I told him about my 3-5 times per week/2-6 ounces per occasion routine. I'm curious to hear what others have to say on the matter, as I surely can't be alone in wondering about the potential ill-effects of our hobby. Enoch
I surely can't be alone in wondering about the potential ill-effects of our hobby.I must admit I have wondered about this. I once tried burning the alcohol off first but it produces a really nasty drink.
harshest
I will typically have 2-3 ounces either neat or in an old fashioned about 4-5 times a week. Although recently I have been cutting back a little. probably to ever 2-3 days I will have a drink.
2highcal
I have 1.5 to 2 oz neat almost every day on a big night I will have 2 if I have 3 then I am heading for bed.
soad
my wife questions the long term consequences of regular whiskey consumption I have the same worries. On the bright side, before I got into bourbon, I would get nasty heartburn once every few weeks, real nasty. Now I never get it, I could be very wrong, but i think bourbon has 'toughened up' my stomach and it can now handle my somewhat unhealthy diet......:skep:

The Boozer
I'm curious to hear what others have to say on the matter, as I surely can't be alone in wondering about the potential ill-effects of our hobby.Winston Churchill used to have 5-6 drinks per night, every night and lived well past 85. George Burns drank 3 martinis every nght and lived to 100, (although the last 3 years were a little rough due to a nasty fall).
tehbeardman
Sun-Thurs I'll have one 1-1.5 oz pour. One of my favorite parts of the evening is sitting in front of my cabinet trying to decide on what pour I should have that night. There are several articles around discussing the benefits of moderate amounts of alcohol on a daily basis. Usually I've seen Men that have no more than 2 'drinks' and women that have no more than 1 'drink' have many health benefits. Now Fri and Sat nights are a much different story. Lets just say its more than my other days
ebo
I usually have 2 drinks an evening... sometimes up to 4. They are usually around 2 oz. pours. I drink all my whisk(e)y neat. Once in a great while, I will add a little water, if I think it will improve it or I just want to cut the alcohol down a bit. I drink almost every evening. I rarely stick with the same brand for the entire evening.
tmckenzie
I am kind of like our old family doctor told my daddy once. Son, it ain't the whiskey that will kill you, it is what you mix it with. This doctor had a habit of only drinking white lightning that he sent a sample to the state lab in montgomery to have tested before he would drink it. He live to a ripe old age too. So I only mix mine with a little air, and have a great big old glass of water behind it.
MarkEdwards
I almost always have a couple of 2 oz pours each night. One while I catch up on the Internet stuff, and one an hour or two later.I generally have two different bottles open - one on the desktop for my first drink, and one up on top the bookshelf for my second drink. Don't ask me why I have this arrangement - it just works for me.I randomly replace empties from my cabinet, and end up with bourbon, Irish, rye or Scotch as chance will have it. Occasionally I'll pour something specific when I'm in a specific mood, like a Van Winkle or a Glenrothes, but it always works out to two drinks of an evening. IronHead
I usually have a 1.5 to 2 oz pour 3 or so nights a week. On the weekends I usually drink more, depending on my mood.
T Comp
"Honest officer I only had one !" Each persons tipping point, even for health purposes, will have great variability based on so many factors including sex, body weight, speed of consumption, food in stomach and on and on. Up to 40 grams of alcohol (three ounces of 100 proof ) is generally viewed as a safe limit for men. I know people who have had liver problems and the common trait seems to be keeping a buzz on through out long periods of each day for years and an indifference towards eating. A nice discussion about this controversy and certain studies on it is contained in a blog from a few years back here http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2007/02/just_how_many_drinks_a_day_is.html
tmckenzie
Liver diesease runs in my family. My dad died of it. He drank probably half a pint a night. His sisters and brothers regardless of if they drank at all have trouble with the liver. My grandfather lived to be 93 and drank probably a pint a day of moonshine he made himself, I do not know he he knew what store bought whiskey tasted like. He also smoked a can of prince albert a day. He drank until he was probably 80, never had trouble. Genetics is funny.
G.H.Adams
I usually have 3 to 4 1.5 ounce pours a night neat. On the weekends I might add a 5th pour. I'm retired so if I sleep till noon no harm.
SMOWK
A half a 750ml 2-3 nights a week. Less on the other days. Usually.
bourbonNOOG
Anywhere from 2-4, 2oz pours a night. Always neat. Might toss a whiskey stone in just to add a slight chill. Try not to stick to the same pour twice, but on those nights when I pour a Pappy 15, BTAC, Weller 12 or OGB 114, I can't help but go back for a second round. callmeox
Maybe an ounce or two a couple of times a week and often less. At this rate, it makes the size of my bunker pretty comical.
