Just back from a quick trip to Chicago, which naturally included a stop here. It's a great place to sample some Bourbons, but have to say the folks behind the bar were, at first, pretty standoffish. Seems as soon as they find out you're a passionate (and not a poser), they warm up to you. If they'd drop the pretense, this place would be perfect.

That's not the first time I've heard that same criticism of the bar staff at Delilah's, Mat. Hope you enjoyed yourself just the same. Nice selection of bourbon and beer, eh? What did you have?

Kinda a medley of Ryes...Whistle Pig, Michter's, their own 15 year bottling (wouldn't divulge who made it, and wouldn't let me inspect the bottle) and High West's Bourye.

Will say this...when I first placed an order, the bartender said the price for my whiskey and a beer was $16. Three more whiskeys and one beer later, the total came to less than $50. Either the barkeep was bad at math or I had passed his 'cool guy test'.

Delilah's location makes it an anachronism. Lincoln Park is not the place to put the most well-stocked whiskey dive bar in the city; or to put it another way, the way the neighborhood has developed since the bar opened is not in its best interest. I live in the city, but there's no reason for me to go anywhere near Delilah's. It's a PiTA to navigate the often-choked streets to get there. I would spend A LOT more time at the bar if it wasn't in Lincoln Park.

So I can understand their initial stand-offish behavior; it's got to be really hard to keep it real in their neck of the woods.

Next time you're in Chicago, check out Longman and Eagle. It's no dive, but it serves delicious gastro-pub food and has a whiskey list put together by the same guy responsible for Delilah's selection. Avoid weekends.
