A store near me has two bottles of EWSB 98 for about $30 each. Was that a good year, and are they worth grabbing?

I don't really have a great answer for you. I found a bottle and picked it up because I'm a big fan of the 2000 and from the 2 pours I've had of the 2001 was pretty impressed as well. Now you should know these aren't going to be the same bourbons at all so whether the 2000 gets great reviews(which it did) shouldn't sway you to buying the 98.

I personally bought it cause I really like those 2 and would like to compare the 98 to them for better or worse.

This thread should provide some extra info and now that I'm in it myself I'm going to bump it to see if we can get Chuck's opinion that he wasn't quite ready to give yet.

I would grab one to try and then weigh your options from there.

I would agree with Scott, grab one and make your own observations... that's the best part, we all don't have to argree...

That said, I've had a few of the 98 EWSB's and didn't like them. My opinon is that the 97 & 98 were rough years for HH after the fire in 96. But they are single barrel so you might find a good one now and then.

I personally like the 95 EWSB best, the 99 is also good.

Thanks for the responses! I think I will pick one up this week. I'm enjoying the 2000 right now. I had a bottle a while back, but it was before I really got into bourbon so the year escapes me. The idea of comparing not only different years but different distilleries as well sounds like a lot of fun!

The 2000 vintage was the best since 96 but 2001 is better, though only a little. That said, I would buy the 98 because it's the harder get, worth having, and you can probably get 2000 and 2001 later. Which of that whole bunch is the best? The 2001.

Good to hear about the '01, as I'm really enjoying the 2000 I have.

UPDATE: So, I picked one of the bottles of 98 today, but stopped at another place earlier and found a bottle of 1996 EWSB! I'm having some friends over this weekend and we'll be able to compare 96, 98, and 00. Can't wait for Saturday!

They didn't/couldn't fill any barrels at DSP-31 after November 7, 1996. Any barrels filled after that date were distilled somewhere else. That there are 1996 barrels filled after the fire indicates how fast they started to distill somewhere else.
