I was talking to Truman Cox about his new job as Master Distiller at A. Smith Bowman and learned from him that, in fact, Virginia Gentleman Bourbon is still made and sold. I thought they killed it in favor of the 'Small Batch" Bowman releases, initially sold only in Virginia. In fact, they killed the 90 proof "Fox" but continue to make the 80 proof VG. Most of it is sold in Virginia.

There's still a few 'boutique' stores selling it here Downunder... Retails for about $70 a bottle

It never left my favorite store in NYC, but I never saw the Fox here.

I still see the 80 proof here in Seattle. But I wish I could get some more of the 90 proof just because it was my drink of choice in college. If only I'd known, I wouldn't have opened my last bottle last year...

I've got a bottle of VG 80 from the 80s or early 90s that I picked up not long ago. I'm going to pick up a bottle of the current stuff and put them next to each other.

Sadly, I'm down to my last bottle of Fox. That was some great juice I hope to come across as a dusty later on. It is the closest thing to an Irish Whiskey that I have tasted in a bourbon.

It's also still sold here in Oregon.

What is the difference between the VG 90 proof with the fox head on the bottle and the one without the fox head?

I know smokinjoe and I have talked about this before, but I was several pours in and can't remember the difference...

Chuck, did he say anything about starting back mashing and fermentation any time soon? I spoke with Joe last year and he said it was going to happen.

Well, "any time soon" would be the issue, but it is definitely on the agenda. First they're going to get a tourism program together and do some general infrastructure upgrades. Truman needs to get his feet wet and get a handle on everything. The plan ultimately is to operate it as a grain-to-bottle micro-distillery with a tourism component. Actually, the "to bottle" part maybe not, because they've consolidated their east coast bottling operation at the old Majestic plant in Maryland, which is being renamed Barton Maryland.

In Virginia, the regular white label never disappeared from the shelves. Fox has been gone since about the time the fancy bowman labels appeared. I liked the fox, so set back a case.

I too miss the fox, but I am glad to hear that the 80 proof is still around (although it has never been in Michigan). I did like the bottle of Bowman Single Barrel bourbon I got a couple years ago, tho. I'd love to try another bottle sometime.

IIRC, the 90 proof is the only one with the fox head, hence the nickname. The 80 proof doesn't have the fox head on it.
