Pirate762
What is the difference between the Hirsch Gold Foil and the Hirsch Gold Wax bourbon? Other than the nammer of sealing them of course.
OscarV
Release dates. They held some back and let it trickle out.It was held in stainless, so the wax is earlier and the foil was sitting around breathing.
B1bomber
I'm sure others here can give you more specifics, but basically, the gold foil was the last, most recent bottling (not counting the boxed humidor set). The gold wax version preceded the gold foil and seems to be more difficult to find, although not as difficult as the blue wax version with the scripted label, which preceded both the gold wax and gold foil. Confused yet? Also, some people say they all have different taste profiles as well but they are supposed to contain the same juice.
Pirate762
Thanks. So what does sitting in a tank do for, or to, the bourbon. I seem to remember a discussion about this concerning Sazerac. It sounded like it was mixed as to the effects. I am asking because I know where a gold wax bottle is and am considering purchasing it.
CorvallisCracker
If there's a lot of air at the top of the tank, and it's in there too long (apparently 5+ years for the gold foil Hirsch) it becomes oxidized.
cowdery
Whether or not being tanked degrades the bourbon is a matter of opinion, based in some cases on logic and conjecture, and in other cases on actual comparison sampling.A diligent search will reveal a lot of the background on this subject. Releases of this same batch of whiskey at different ages and proofs, and in different packages, occurred over several years. Every bottling was small but some were smaller than others, with the last one (16 yr., gold foil) being far and away the largest. The earlier bottlings, including gold wax, were measured in hundreds of cases. The gold foil was measured in thousands of cases. The gold foil is still 'out there' as in a few stores still have it. The only gold wax is in private collections.
White Dog
Preiss still has humidor bottles(gold foil) to sell to the market, but at $1200 retail per bottle, who the hell's buying?
Pirate762
What is a humidor bottle? Must be special for that price. I, like many probably, have never heard of such.
RyanL
AFAIK, it's just a way they packaged the last of their gold foil bottles so they could sell them at a insanely ridiculous price.
cowdery
It says, "You're never going to drink it at that price so here's a nice box to keep it in, so it will look nice when you show it to people, you idiot."
