He who hesitates........Or who snagged my Pappy!

After a brief excursion into work this morning, I swung by a local favorite store of mine to take a gander to see if something interested me.

Originally I had some thought on picking up a new Weller SR, but I'm always open to whatever I see.

I head to the back of the store where the bourbon and scotch is, and go straight for the case where they keep the higher end items, and the wave of dismay then hits me.

What had been a supply of about 4 Pappy 23 'sand maybe 5 Pappy 20's, were entirely cleared out! I had been working on the 20's for quite a while, slowly making a purchase here and there. I've been a customer of the store for a long time, and have a good relationship with the staff, which, as we all know, is a absolute must do! It certainly has gotten me things over the years that I probably wouldn't have been able to get otherwise.

To say I was bummed is a understatement!

After I checked out with my purchase, I asked one of the staff who I knew would know something about it. He mentioned that someone in the last week came in, and grabbed them all. A significant purchase to say the least. Believed he said the guy said he was from Washington, the western one not the DC.

My hope is that it did go to somebody who will enjoy them over time, and not to somebody who knows that they can just resell them for some quick cash.

The moral of my story, as I've read it here time and time again, if you see it, don't hesitate to buy it, because next time when you go back, no matter how isolated the store, or how dusty that bottle was, it just may not be there the next time.

Sigh.............

But I did manage to pick up something else. :grin: And there is a bit or irony to it. But that is a tale for another thread.

Similar thing happened to me a month or so ago. I knew better than to leave Pappy on the shelf, but seeing how there were 4-5 Pappy 20s I thought 1-2 would still be around in a week or so. I was wrong. So far I only found 1 bottle of the 20 this year and I have to burn into some of my 15 stash because It never even gets to the shelves!

However, a Seattle friend of mine was in NY last week and cleared out the VWFRR. He left the Lot B, 20 and 23. :cool:

My $0.02? Let 'em alone. In 3-5 yrs. the VW mania will (hopefully) be over. Then, once BT can match production with demand, the 15 yr won't be so likely to get pricejacked, and none of us will have to hunt it like the Lord God Bird.

Will all BT PVW be as good as the current stuff (whatever it may be: SW, Bernheim, BT, Anheuser-Busch, or a mix of all 4)? I don't know.

I can guarantee lots of folks will swear it's not (even if they've never done a blind side by side, or any other kind of comparison.)

A minority will say it is as good.

A smaller minority will say it's better.

Nobody will will really know.

We'll all enjoy arguing about it.

But I can certainly say that future PVW15 will be good, if not great.

My $0.02? Let 'em alone. In 3-5 yrs. the VW mania will (hopefully) be over. Then, once BT can match production with demand, the 15 yr won't be so likely to get pricejacked, and none of us will have to hunt it like the Lord God Bird.

Passage of time tends to lionize the greatness of what is no longer available, thus making it more desirable and coveted. Case in point- the current high demand and resultant cost of Hirsch (Michters) whiskey.

Side by side with other excellent bourbon I find the Pappy 15 to edge out all but one or two currently available whiskey of any type. It is world class and deserves the accolades.

I would buy whatever is available now. Best case I could trade it down the road if need be- worst case I would force myself to drink it :grin:. Either way it's a no lose situation.

I get what you're saying. What I meant is that once PVW15 (and 20 for that matter) is unequivocally not SW, and is no longer necessarily allocated because BT is making "enough", then maybe the clamor will abate for the current stuff, i.e. the stuff that will be bottled in the years to come.

I completely agree that the enthusiasm for the old stuff will only increase.

Couldn't agree more. Lots of bourbons make headlines and bring in gullible people who just don't know better. Pappy 15 is worthy of the hype and it won't become less difficult to find in the foreseeable future.

The Lot B is not SW and is either Bernheim or BT they could probably bottle all they wanted of it but yet it is limited in release.
