It seems that Australia is about to get a new limited release Jim Beam. According to the information on hand, this is a 700ml bottle of 8 years old 95 proof Jim Beam and will retail at (wait for it) $189.99.

The blurb is as follows - Jim Beam 1795, a Bourbon that can only be described as pure Bourbon, can be seen sleeping quietly on the fifth floor of a specially selected, five story rack house, deep in the Kentucky heartland. Since 1795 when Jacob Beam’s first barrels of “Old Jake†corn whiskey were created, Bourbon has been produced by seven generations of Beam family distillers. This unique handcrafted spirit celebrates these beginnings and presents an opportunity to experience Bourbon at its finest.

Does anyone thinks this sounds like fancy packaged 8yo Jim Black Label?

Yes it does but then Beam has to pay for the fancy bottle. You guys down under get hammered on prices. I get upset with distillers putting old juice in a bottle that most times is worth more than the whisk(e)y inside.

Single Malt companies are bad for that.

Giving this one a wide berth

I'll probably pick up one to try, but can't justify a 2nd one at that price

Why would you pay that kind of money for a higher proof JBB in a fancy bottle? This is a $30 bourbon at best. I'm just about to the point of not buying anything from JB.

I couldn't agree more.... it sounds to me like an 8yo Jim Beam Black at a slightly higher proof. But, I'm a sucker for a nice package and am also a loyal Beam drinker/supporter. I also doubt Beam are charging much for the bottles. Australian customs and shipping charges are probably making up at least 50% of that price.

Tym, it's on the Dan Murphy's site - that's about all I know at the moment. Scott has some additional info, but it's a bit unreliable. He's trying to get some clarification.

Just picked up 4. The Beam guys didn't know much about this, and requested info from Dan Murphys. The DM guy was excited as it's the only 8 year old bourbon Jim Beam produce (apparently). A reliable source at Beam told me there isn't much coming, and he did say it was for our market. 700ml tells me it wont be available in the states, you simply wouldn't make 2 moulds of this bottle.

The store I went to received their stock today, a total of 4 cases. 2 bottles per case. They said they couldn't order any more.

My friend from Beam said he had tried the sample batch of the whiskey when they were planning the packaging, and it was sensational whiskey.......but I'm in 2 minds. Love the bottle, but I can get KC single barrel shipped over here and get some great 9yo whiskey thats 120 proof in a 750ml bottle for a little over $100..........................

In saying that, I will let you guys know what it's like.

If there's any crazy Beam collectors out there that want one, let me know.

Scott

Jim Beam will need to buy me dinner first before I bend over for this one.

They would be a lot more likely to win my business bringing in OGD BiB or 114 as a WT8 competitor...

I want to send him an email pointing out in the US JBB is 8yo and 20 odd bucks, KC is 9 yo and 30 odd and KC SB is 9yo, 120 proof and only 40 bucks.....not to mention a single barrel bourbon.....

This stuff does smell amazing, but so does our new 6yo JBB.

I should point out to him Basil Hayden is 8yo and 1/3 the price, and you get an extra 50ml.

Am I the only one looking at this bottle who thinks Barton (now Sazerac) will be on the other side of the trade dress battle they lost with 1792 Ridgewood Reserve?

BTW Cam, I was guessing the conversion rate was something like AUD 3 = USD 1 -- not close to par!
