"American Bourbon Beats Scotch Whisky!

FRANKFORT, Franklin County, Ky (July, 2011) – George T. Stagg, the

iconic uncut, unfiltered bourbon released annually from Buffalo Trace

Distillery, has been named the number one spirit in the world, knocking

off the perennial favorite Highland Park 18 Scotch Whisky for the first

time since 2005. The list, compiled annually by noted sprits reviewer

F. Paul Pacult, was released in his June 2011 issue of The Spirit Journal.

The George T. Stagg is also the first American Whiskey to ever be named

number one in The Spirit Journal’s 13 years of tabulating."

You got it Oscar.

A fine and distinctive spirit but I wouldn't give it a no. 1 in the world.

George T. Stagg is an outstanding whiskey. So is Highland Park 18 year old. So are a lot of other whiskies on the market. And a lot of other non-whiskey distilled spirits. Choosing one such product as the "best" is a completely subjective choice. It's silly. It's just made up. Just like People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive".

Of course, if I were named Sexiest Man Alive, I'd tell everybody about it. So I don't blame Buffalo Trace for publicizing the award. But we should keep in mind that the award is based upon one person's opinion, choosing from a very diverse sample of spirits of all types. So it's nothing to take too seriously.

Speaking of awards, I think actress Ellie Kemper is the best looking babe around (other than my wife). I hope Ellie is honored by my award!

It's not like this is unchartered territory for GTS. Jim Murray has named Stagg his #1 Whiskey in the world at least twice. It has earned it's stripes over the years. Year in, and year out, Stagg's greatness is documented. Yes, it's a subjective award, but deserving of it in every measurable way. Face it folks, Stagg can compete with ANY spirit made on this planet. There may be others that can be judged it's equal, but none better. And, at <$100, buying it is like stealing.

Don't encourage "them". Buying it less than $60 is like stealing!

I do like the 2011 a lot!

(and drinking it straight out of the bottle, well that's a real mans job!......or a crazy man? amirite?)

Stagg is the number one ranked bourbon on the prestigous "Spirits that Bourbon Boiler wants to try but hasn't yet" list. I didn't see anyone tweeting this. It took over last June when I tried Pappy.

Better than Highland Park scotch?!?!?

No way!:skep:

Yeah Oscar, I believe it. At least I don't pour it into my windshield washer but that's where the Scotch would end up.

You have a 2011? Punk I can't find any in CA. None of my normal shops have any idea when/if they will get any.

That sucks

BT didn't hook you up with a taste Tom?

I'll send you over a mini of the 2011 from the 375ml sample they sent me for review on my new blog:

www.i_like_drinking_bourbon_so_send_me_some.com

How'd that sample turn out Tom?

Still haven't heart from my BTAC network on an Indiana release yet.

Ran across the Stagg completely unexpectedly yesterday at a Bevmo.

The only thing that I'm not 100% sold on is the finish - it dries out a bit at the end in a way that I don't dig.

That said, the nose and palate are ridiculous.

I think I prefer last year's ever so slightly but there's a lot of goodness in this one. If it didn't do the weird dry-out late in the finish it'd be virtually unstoppable.

Well I'm pretty darn sure I prefer the 2010 GTS.

Nothing wrong with the 2011 but the 2010 had that buttery goodness with impeccable mouthfeel that dropped a little toffee on the way down.

2010 had a pretty amazing finish. I remember apple pie on the finish; it was very fall spice and like you said, buttery and sweet (but not overly so).

2011 is all about cherries to me. Also a more noticeable rye presence to my taste. I find it benefits greatly from just a bit of time to open up. I'm kind of surprised how quickly I'm moving through the bottle though - I may need to find another one...

Comparing Scotch to Bourbon is like comparing Haggis to Kobe Prime Rib.

Scotch Whisky is a poor attempt by the Scots to make Irish Whiskey.

Whoever coinned the phrase "once you get past the smell, you've got it licked" had to be referring to Scotch.

Bourbon and Rye Rule!!

A good Cognac or Armangnac will do in a pinch.
