My son just phoned me from St. Elmo's in downtown Indy that they purchased two barrel buys from Willett. Both are Barrel Proof Bourbons. One is a 20 y/o and the other a 10 y/o. The kid said that the 20 is incredible with hints of coconut and the 10 is good also. I'm just passin this on in case you people get thirsty while you are downtown.

The only problem is that bourbon does not pair well with their shrimp cocktail. You need to drink something to cool down your mouth rather than heat it up (they grate fresh horseradish every day to make their cocktail sauce with).

As great as the shrimp cocktail is, it will probably not do you any favors for trying to analyze good bourbon immediately thereafter. Maybe the shrimp should be your dessert.

Wow, it's been 24 years since I've been to St Elmos, and I can still taste the cocktail sauce. Agree with waiting until after dinner to taste the Willett

Looks like you beat me by sixty seconds.

Born and raised in Indiana and I'm ashamed to say I've never been there. :-/

Me neither, sadly. By the time I was old enough to fully appriciate a good steakhouse, I had already moved away. :(

I have a good idea of where I want to eat supper next time I'm back there, tho!

Nor have I, despite living in Indiana for all but four months of my life. I have been a couple of times to Harry & Izzy's, which is their sister restaraunt next door. I believe they actually share a kitchen. H&I has many of the St. Elmo's items on their menu, including the shrimp cocktail.

That seems to be how things work. I was born and raised a few miles from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I've been through it one time... and that was 25 years ago.

Got the chance to try the 20yr at Vine & Table's Indy Whisky & Spirits Expo and it is pretty incredible. Rich and flavorful with a hint of dryness from the age. Well-balanced pepper and heat following the toffee and vanilla sweetness yet not overpowering at all. Recommended if you're down that way.

have fun,

aaron
