PVW15 Substitute

PVW15 along with the other PVWs are hard to come by in SE Michigan. I am curious to read if anyone has opinions on what other bourbons they have tried that most closely resembled the taste of PVW15. A friend swears up and down that Bookers taste exactly the same. I don't agree, but haven't found anything yet that is closer. I have tried JP17 and JP18, but find them to not be any closer.

Granted, there probably isn't anything else that tastes exactly the same but I am interested in what others have to say.

Yeah...Booker's tasted NOTHING like Pappy 15.

I think the closest think that is available would be ORVW 10/107 or maybe some of the older OWA 7/107 if you can still find it.

I haven't tried the OWA 7/107, but I have seen it a couple times. If those store still have them, I will check and see if I can decipher the date code.

Agreed on the 10/107. Your most likely seeing the newer bottles of the OWA so unless it looks like the current ORVW type label don't check it because its not the old stuff.

Bob's right. The OWA 7/107 would be close, and very affordable. I think you were even closer with the Jefferson's 17yr, that should be SW juice. Perhaps you could find an Old Fitz dusty with SW juice inside but I believe the proof would be lower than the PVW15.

That's tough. There's a reason PVW15's sell like wildfire. There's just nothing out there that tastes quite like it. My $0.02, go with the JPR 17, that's about as close as you'll get.

Thanks Josh. JPR 17 is all but gone in MI, but luckily I still have (1) bottle stashed away for a rainy day.

I don't have the proper ingredients at the moment, but I think that it might be interesting to try 1 part Makers 46 to 5 parts William Larue Weller (plus some water.)

Picked up a few bottles of the older OWA 7/107, the type that has the bottle similar to ORVW 10/107. Decided that I couldn't pass it up at $24/bottle.

Not a substitute, but I would try the WLW or George Stag and bring it down to a similar proof.

Good choice, but I'm thinking the original purpose was to pick something that was slightly more readily available than PVW. Stagg and WLW don't quick make that cut in my mind.

That's why nobody says, why drink PVW when you can drink XXXXXXX for less. Nobody has really come up with anything much.

That's because there isn't anything. OWA comes nowhere near Pappy 15, IMO. Pappy has no substitutes, but it has peers. The Four Roses LE releases come to mind, as well as the PHCs.

W L Weller Antique is a good substitute for Pappy Van Winkle 15 yr. Our little bourbon-tasting group recently had a blind tasting of Pappy Van Winkle 15 yr, Van Winkle Lot B (12 yr), and W L Weller Antique (no age statement). The favorite was W L Weller Antique. It is readily available, has a low price, and is as good as or better than Pappy Van Winkle 15 yr.

Previously, in a blind tasting, we preferred the W L Weller Antique bourbon without an age statement over the age-stated version. It is amazing what you can learn from blind tastings.

Well, I'm envious that you enjoy such a low priced bourbon so much. However, I can't share in the OWA love. I think ORVW 10/107 is an solid substitute for Pappy 15 if one can find it, though it doesn't have the same depth of flavor. I've never tried the older OWA, but the current version tastes too young and spirity to me.

My birthday is this week, and I'm going to try William Larue Weather for the first time. I'm hoping it's as good as Pappy 15.

The first thing that came to my mind was Weller 12yr. I have several bottles that are 02 and 04's that are equally as nice. But I also take the 15 down to about 95 proof. The current Weller 12 is a very nice everyday bourbon. I think it's better than the current OWA that they managed to ruin compared to ones from 07,04,03,99.

I do the same thing but if you ever have the chance to do true blind...not from your bottles or a clue what your sampling...from proof, to age, to mash bill and dusty or not...and you should really be amazed. Most will easily mistake a rye bourbon for a wheater bourbon or vice versa at a minimum. You also pick up on tastes and flavors that you never were aware of and may not care much for until then you find out it's in one of your favorites. My preferred training tool for the Straight Bourbon BTOTY contest which, ahem...I do believe I won this year :grin: .

I love true blind tastings. While they can be very humbling at times, they can also be reaffirming.

For example, I LOVE the PHC 10yr Wheater. And I recently reviewed it in a blind sample tasting (came in a 2oz unmarked plastic bottle, had no clue) and scored it a resounding 98. I'll attach my review for anyone interested.
