Anything better than redbreast for irish?

Red Breast is fantastic for sure, but comes with a price. I think the 12 year is about $50ish and the 15 is around $65. My buddy bought me a bottle of Michael Collins for helping do his brakes and for the price it was very drinkable. I also like powers 12. There seem to be a lot of new additions to the Irish line up at my local store and I will probably give most of them a shot.

I like Black Bush alot. I don't know if it's better, but it's a good dram at a good price (about half the price of Redbreast).

Redbreast remains my favorite Irish whiskey, and in its price point (at least in WA) there is very little to compare it to (Greenore, or Bushmills 10).

It is a totally different drink but the Michael Collins Single Malt probably has surpased Redbreast on my list of favorite Whiskies, but I hesitate to call it an Irish. It seems so different from the other Irish's I have tried. My limited palate wants to put it in the Scotch category with its slightly peated flavor. I find it full of flavor and smooth. I love the slightly smoky finish.

Michael Collins SM and Redbreast are similar in price here in WA., both wonderful drinks and both bottles I will always try to have on hand.

Powers Gold is my favorite of the less expensive bottles.

I am in love with Midleton, but it's expensive - $140 - $160 a bottle. I gave a bottle to the guy I used to work for, and he declared it "liquid gold".

I'll give props to the Powers 12, too. The Powers Gold is good and well-priced, as well. Cooley has a very nice unpeated whiskey - Slieve Foy 8yr - that is quite good if you can find it.

I should clarify, I think both Powers expressions are great and are exemplary Irish whiskies but I think Redbreast is better overall. One of my favorite of any style.

There are some good single malts: Bushmills 10, Knappogue Castle 12, Tyrconnell. But they don'y give you the same flavour profile as Redbreast.

I am not a particular fan of the RB 12. I really liked the new 12yo cask strength version thou, so try look out for that one

If you like the pure pot still whiskies, try Green Spot, it's fantastic. Very hard to find though. I don't think Ireland exports it.

Better? No. However, as previously mentioned there are a number of fine whiskeys coming out of Ireland. Dive in and explore!

Trader Joe's just came out with a single malt Irish whiskey from Cooley. It's a good balance of fruity and smoky, like a mix of Tyrconnell and Connemara (link to more extensive review below). For the price ($20) it's a great deal for a very drinkable Irish malt. If you're in a place with a Trader Joe's (and a state that lets them sell alcohol), I'd definitely recommend it.

It got even better from 2010 on. More sherry and creamier.

I drank a bottle of GreenSpot 2 years ago. I'd rather have 2 bottles of Red Breast for the same money.

This new RedBreast cask strength may be better though......

Connemara and Green Spot would probably be the main competitors, and if you like that sort of thing you might try some Islay malts, if you haven't, like Laphroaig.

Also, Finger Lakes in New York makes a "Pure Pot Still" whiskey in the Irish style.

Green Spot gives Redbreast a run for its money. Preferences are split whenever I do a head-to-head with a group of friends. Pick some up the next time you're in Ireland. :grin:

Powers John's Lane is a big hit. I know Dominic Roskrow loved it. The guy that runs my local whisky club is from Ireland and he recently brought a bottle back with him. He was kind enough to send a sample my way. I've yet to try it and formally review it (too many damn whiskies to sample lately, of course, NOT complaining). I'll be sure to post my notes here when I do. For what it's worth, TomH said its the best Irish he's ever had. Better than Green Spot and Redbreast (non CS).

I don't know about better, but Bushmill's 10 y.o. single malt is mighty fine and not too pricey. I'll add my voice, too, to the high praises for Powers Gold label (Great price/quality imo), and Tyreconnell.

Agreed on Bushmill's. It fared well in an Irish head-to-head I did last year. Tyrconnell is also nice. Another one no one has mentioned is The Wild Geese. Not sure about the regular blend but they have a limited-edition bottling that is very nice.

There is no bad whiskey.

I've enjoyed the RB12 better than the other Irish whiskeys I've purchased. I've yet to try a few of them out there, so who knows....but Redbreast is a very fine whiskey. I plan to pick up a bottle of the cask strength soon.
